Fall Frosty Awards Nominees: Female Athlete of the Year

From now until Jan. 2, the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Department will debut the Frosty Award nominees for the fall semester.  These are the fall nominees for Female Athlete of the Year. Tuesday we'll unveil the fall nominees for Male Athlete of the Year.  

The 11th annual Frosty Awards will take place April 30 and honor athletic excellence in Carson-Newman's athletic department.

Female Athlete of the Year

Julia Wheeler (Volleyball): Wheeler completed her third season at C-N after transferring in from Tennessee Tech. This season she was voted onto the All-SAC first team team and the All-Region second team. As of Nov. 17, Wheeler is the national and conference leader in total attacks, with 1,372 tallied for the season. She also led the league in total kills (421), kills per set (3.79), and points per set (4.14). She recorded a season high 27 kills against Wingate on Oct. 6, a match of the school record set by Molly Locke in 2015. She played in 31 matches and collected 423 kills, 287 digs, 24 service aces, and 29 blocks.

Katie Smock (Cross Country): Smock made her presence felt on the Eagles cross country team early, earning SAC Runner of the Week honors in October after an 18:18 race in the ASICS Invitational, finishing 1st. The senior was consistent throughout the campaign, earning All-Conference honors with a 20th-place finish at the SAC Championship race  Leading the pack all season, Smock closed out her senior season with an impressive 30th place finish at the Southeast Regional, finishing amongst the country's best.

Felicia Frick (Soccer): Frick took her game to another level during her sophomore season. After just one assist as a freshman, Frick has six in 2023, the sixth most in the SAC. She recorded two in a 4-1 win versus Emory & Henry on Sept 20. Frick's assist against Coker three days later helped the Eagles knock off the Cobras.The midfielder has been one of the more pristine penalty kick takers in program history. Three of her four goals this season have been from via the PK. Frick is a perfect 5-5 on penalty kicks, which is tied for the most penalty kicks made in program history. In the SAC quarterfinals on Saturday, Frick scored the go-ahead goal in the 108th minute to knock off the Trojans and advance Carson-Newman to the SAC semifinals. That goal was Frick's first non-penalty goal of her career.

Abbie Zander (Soccer): Zander earned her second consecutive all-conference honor, and third career honor in 2023. The senior defender scored three goals and added one assist from a defensive spot this season. Her first goal of the year came in a tie at Young Harris on September 6th. She scored her other two goals in home wins over Emory & Henry and Bluefield State. The goal-scoring has come with efficiency. 10 of her 17 shots this season have hit the target. Zander has eight career goals and eight career assists. 

Kyla Blakemore (Swimming): Blakemore earned an NCAA DII 'B' cut for her third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke against #1 ranked University of Indianapolis. She finished the race in 2:02.68. She placed fourth in the 100 back in 57.04, a season-best time, and contributed a leg to the Eagles' second-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:38.31). Blakemore has four first-place finishes on the season so far and five top-5 performances.
