Eagles and Pioneers split doubleheader Saturday

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (10-5, 5-4 South Atlantic Conference) took game two of a doubleheader 7-2 over the Tusculum Pioneers (7-5, 5-3 SAC) while the home team won game one 10-9 Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

"We had to grind this day out," head coach Tom Griffin said about the afternoon at the ball park. "Yesterday we did not play with any energy. We have to do the things that we practice and preach about. We need to be more talkative than the other team and play with energy and enthusiasm. We did that today."

GAME ONE – Tusculum 10  Carson-Newman 9

Junior right-handed pitcher Michael Cogliano (Medford, N.J.) came in to pitch the ninth inning with the score tied at nine. On a 1-2 pitch, the righty hit shortstop Chris Waylock with a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Cogliano intentionally walked pinch-hitter Jalen Shuffler. Left fielder Vinny Ferrera rolled a ball to junior shortstop Bryan Everhart (Greeneville, Tenn.) that he bobbled to load the bases. First basmen Heath Comerford roped a ball that sophomore first basemen Shade Jett (Talbott, Tenn.) had to dive to his right to glove the ball. Jett tried for the double play throwing it to second, but the throw back to first was not in time and the Pioneer won 10-9.

The two teams traded blows as each team scored at least one run in nine consecutive half innings that allowed the home team to jump out to a 9-5 advantage.

Seven of eight Eagles had been retired until Jett led off the eighth inning with a single to center field. Everhart followed with a long home run over the fence in left center on the seventh pitch of the at-bat to pull Carson-Newman within two runs.

In the top of the ninth inning, senior second basemen Trace Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) reached on an error by Waylock to start the frame. Junior left fielder Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) tallied his 100th career hit with a double to the gap in right center. Jett singled home Rogers with one out on a base hit to center. Everhart followed with a line drive single back up the middle to tie the score at nine.

"Coach always give us roles," Ausmus said after the game. "We established early last season that that is going to be my role to be a clutch hitter. I've carried it over from last year to this year and I'm starting to feel good at the plate."

Ausmus went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. The Eagle pitching staff allowed a season-high 15 hits and ten runs in the contest.

GAME TWO – Carson-Newman  7  Tusculum  2

The Eagles used a six-run fifth inning to earn its tenth win of the season. With one out, a pair of players drew walks and an error loaded the bases. Ausmus roped a ball to left field to score the tying run and keep the bases loaded. A wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run. After another walk loaded the bases, Everhart drove a ball to left center to plate two runs and extend the lead to three. Junior first basemen Evan Jurjevic (New Carlisle, Ind.) slapped a double past the outstretched glove of Waylock to make it a 7-2 lead.

Carson-Newman scored its first run on an RBI triple by sophomore designated hitter Joe Tipton (Dandridge, Tenn.) that he laced past a diving Comerford at first base.

Eagle starter Dustin Dunagan (Winder, Ga.) tossed a complete game to earn his first victory since April 21, 2013. The senior hurled seven innings of five-hit, two-run baseball needing just 96 pitches to close out the game.

The win for the Eagles snapped a nine-game losing streak at Pioneer Park dating back to March 13, 2010.

The Eagles return home to the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex for a doubleheader against Belmont Abbey Wednesday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.
