Timmerman, timely hits propel C-N over Trevecca Nazerene

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – With a 6-4 win Tuesday afternoon, the Carson-Newman Eagles (20-21) have won three consecutive games as the Trevecca Nazerene Trojans (27-9) were held to just two hits over the final six frames at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

Senior right-handed pitcher Brandon Timmerman (Seymour, Tenn.) earned his first save since the 2012 season firing the final 5.1 innings allowing just two hits with two strikeouts in his longest outing in two years.

"I was throwing inside well," Timmerman said about his effectiveness after the game. "That's what I need to do and that's what I've done the majority of my career. It really worked for me today getting my two-seam [fast]ball inside."

The Eagles surged out of the gate in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, sophomore third basemen Brandon Roberts (Davie, Fla.) drew a five-pitch walk.  Junior right fielder Bo Ausmus (Jefferson City, Tenn.) lined a double off of the left field fence to put two men in scoring position. On a 1-1 pitch, junior first basemen Evan Jurjevic (New Carlisle, Ind.) roped a ball into right center field to score both men and give Carson-Newman a 2-0 lead. After junior shortstop Bryan Everhart (Greeneville, Tenn.) singled, junior designated hitter Cody Fox (Seymour, Tenn.) laced a single to left field to make it a three-run lead for the home team.

After facing the minimum in the first two innings, sophomore starting pitcher Clayton Eames (Hoschton, Ga.) was chased from the mound in the third inning. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for leadoff hitter Nick Howell. The centerfielder smacked a double into the gap in left center to plate a pair of runs. After a two-out walk to Hunter Newman, Luke Fennell doubled to the right field wall to put the visiting club on top 4-3.

Carson-Newman did not let the lead hold for long as it plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Ausmus started the frame with a double and scored on a two-base hit down the left field line by Everhart. Two batters later with two outs, junior centerfielder Evan Kirkpatrick (Jefferson City, Tenn.) singled to center field to score Everhart and make it a 5-4 game.

Roberts walked with one out in the fourth inning and came around to score on a base hit to center field by Jurjevic to give the Eagles a 6-4 advantage.

"I think that's what we have been capable of all along," head coach Tom Griffin said of his offense's performance this afternoon. "It's nice to see it happen against a quality team."

Ausmus tallied his fifth three-hit day of the year going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while Jurjevic notched his first three-hit game of the season going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.

Junior right-handed pitcher Carson Bryant (Fletcher, N.C.) worked a scoreless inning of relief to improve to 2-1 on the year.

Carson-Newman will have two days off before beginning a crucial three-game series against the Wingate Bulldogs Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. from the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. All three games will be broadcast in high definition on the Eagle Sports Network.
