Carson-Newman Baseball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (10-5) begin a stretch of nine out of ten games at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (5-10).

Carson-Newman is 5-0 at home this season and is looking for its best start at home since the Eagles began 6-0 at the friendly confines in 2002. The 2002 club won the South Atlantic Conference regular season championship and went to the NCAA Tournament.

The contest Wednesday is the Eagles' sixth nonconference game of the season as Carson-Newman is 5-1 in such contests this season.

After losing two out of three games at Tusculum over the weekend, Carson-Newman is looking to right the ship, particularly on the mound. The Eagles' bullpen allowed 14 runs and 21 hits in 16 innings against the Pioneers. Prior to the series, relievers had allowed 18 runs in 38.1 innings pitched.

Tusculum racked up 15 hits in game two of the series, the most allowed by the Eagles on the season as the Pioneers outscored Carson-Newman 22-11 over the weekend.

The Crusaders have lost seven of their last eight ball games and are 0-5 on the road this season. Away from Abbey Yard, Belmont Abbey is hitting .143.

Belmont Abbey has stolen 33 bases this season in 38 attempts with 11 different players having at least one swiped bag this year. Freshman outfielder Nick Bienlich leads the team in hitting with a .286 average and nine runs batted in.

The Crusaders have a team ERA of 5.92 as they have allowed 151 hits in 120 innings. However, Belmont Abbey pitchers have punched out 110 batters this season compared to just 44 walks.

Wednesday marks the 25th meeting between Carson-Newman and Belmont Abbey that sees the Eagles hold a 15-9 edge. The two sides split a pair of games last season with each squad winning on the road. Carson-Newman earned a 10-8 victory on April 9 as the Eagles cranked out 17 hits led by three knocks by sophomore outfielder Joe Tipton (Dandridge, Tenn.). Each Eagle that registered an official at-bat collected at least one hit in the game.

The matchup marks the first high definition broadcast of the season for the baseball team on cneagles.com/live. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network begins at 1:50 p.m.
