Better Know the Opponent, Week 7: Newberry

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - This is the seventh part in an 11-part series breaking down each of Carson-Newman football's opponents for the 2015 season.  This feature breaks down the Eagles' homecoming opponent – the Newberry Wolves.

Newberry tub-thumped Carson-Newman 46-21 at Setzler Field toward the tail end of the 2014 season.  The result was a bright note for Newberry, which struggled to a .500 record a year after making the playoffs, and yet another slow start for Carson-Newman, which fell behind 33-14 in  the first quarter.

The main reason for that 19-point first quarter lead for the Wolves was sophomore quarterback Raleigh Yeldell.

"Raleigh Yeldell is a special kid on and off the field," Newberry head coach Todd Knight said during the South Atlantic Conference's Digital Media Day. "I think he's a dual threat guy. If everything around him goes wrong, he can make it right. He can beat you with his arm and his feet. We just had a problem keeping him healthy since he's not a big guy."

Health was the problem for Yeldell last year against Carsron-Newman.  He concussed himself on an eight-yard touchdown run to close the first quarter.  Camaraderie was high that day for the Wolves as Yeldell's teammates aided paramedics in placing Yeldell into an ambulance, shouting the instruction to "take care of our homeboy," which was overheard on the field.

That level of camaraderie should return.  For all intents and purposes, the Wolves return all 11 members of the starting offense.  Yeldell is not considered a returning starter as WT Murden took the bulk of the reps last season.

However, Carson-Newman is well acquainted with the junior signalcaller, who will play his fourth game against the Eagles this season.

The only downside for the Wolves offensively are the loss of leading receiver Byron Dickerson and athletic tightend Ozzie Exume.

Jalen Cook leads the receiving corps among returnees with 345 receiving yards on 25 catches.  He also scored five touchdowns.

Romelo Doctor and Ryan Barnwell highlight a talented backfield.

Defensively, Todd Knight's Wolves must replace Edmond Robinson, a seventh round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings, as well as two  other linebackers in  Dontavia Reid and AJ Booker.

All-name team candidate Alstevis Squirewell  headlines the returners on the Wolves defense with 66 stops and 17 tackles for loss.  Taylor McDonnell will take over the reigns of the linebacking corps.  He made 64 stops last year with 13.5 tackles for loss.

Carson-Newman's Better Know The Opponent series returns Thursday with a preview of week eight opponent Wingate.
