GREENVILLE, S.C. – Former Carson-Newman football coach Dal Shealy is among the inductees for the fourth class of the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame. 

Shealy will be inducted in a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Greenville on April 21.  He will join Clemson linebacker Jeff Davis, University of Tennessee wide receiver Stanley Morgan and Clemson defensive lineman Michael Dean Perry. 

Dalmuth "Dal" Shealy was born on August 1, 1938, and he attended high school in Batesburg, South Carolina. Shealy was a three sport athlete in high school and earned four varsity letters in each sport.

He attended and played football for Carson-Newman College, and he eventually went on to serve his country in the Marines, where he continued playing football.  A reservist for the United State Marine Corps in college, he was commissioned as a lieutenant upon graduation and went on to win the National Service Championship playing ball for the Quantico Marines.

After he left the military, Shealy began his coaching career. He went on to earn NAIA Coach of the Year in both 1971 and 1972 while guiding Carson-Newman to its first NAIA championship game appearance in 1972 where the Eagles lost to East Texas State 21-18.  Shealy was 30-13 in his four years as head coach at Mossy Creek. 

He helped reinstate the football programs at Mars Hill and was later the head coach with the University of Richmond. He also served as Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Baylor, Tennessee, Auburn, and Iowa State.

He took the Spiders to a pair of playoff appearances and was named Virginia coach of the year in his eight years at the helm of the Richmond football program. 

He was a pioneer in coaching and football his entire career even developing some of the concepts and techniques now used in the popular spread offense.

In 1989 Dal Shealy joined the FCA in its infancy and helped establish the organization as an international juggernaut. He served as President from 1992 until 2005. Accompanying his long list of accomplishments is Mr. Shealy's literary success. He has written several books about playing football and coaching.

Dal currently lives in Clemson, South Carolina with his wife Barbara, and they have been married over 55 years.

Shealy was presented with Carson-Newman's Founder's Day Medallion, one of the most prestigious honors given by the university, in October of 2015.
