VIDEO: Carson Wise Interview
"I'm excited for it," Wise said. "It's nice to come in and have something happen early. We (as a special teams group) just want to come in and continue the success, going week-by-week as best we can."
Wise was 8-for-8 on converting extra points and nailed a 40-yard field goal that would eventually prove to be the difference for the Eagles' in their wild 59-56 victory over the University of the Cumberlands (KY).
"I wasn't quite sure how far it was," Wise said. "Through high school and stuff, you kick so much, it's all the same. I'll kick it, and once it's done, I'll figure out the distance and all that stuff. It really doesn't hit until after I kick, I'm just trying to replicate what we do in practice."
Wise becomes the first Eagle to earn special teams player of the week honors since Lonnie Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) grabbed an accolade in week three of 2014 after returning a kickoff for 100 yards against Brevard.
Wise becomes the first Carson-Newman kicker to garner such an accolade since Curt Duncan nailed late field goal to help C-N beat Colorado School of Mines in week two of 2013. Duncan was a five-time SAC Special Teams Player of the Week honoree in his career and earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in his junior season.
Wise and the rest of the Eagles will be on display Saturday at noon when C-N takes on the Shorter Hawks. Kickoff is set for noon with pregame coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starting at 11 a.m. with the Appalachian Electric Cooperative Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
