NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman quarterback De'Andre Thomas (Milledgeville, Ga.) has garnered a second consecutive Tennessee State Sportswriters' Association state player of the week award after his record-setting performance in the Eagles' 61-59 playoff loss to Valdosta State.
Thomas completed 20-of-27 passes for a school-record 416 yards and three touchdowns in the Eagles' 61-59 shootout loss.
The Milledgeville, Ga., native posted a 45-yard TD pass to Aaron Seward (Charlotte, N.C.) early in the second quarter and tossed 43 and 24-yard touchdown throws to TraShaun Ward (Miami, Fla.), with the second one giving the Eagles a 52-48 lead with 4:02 remaining.
The 416-yard performance is the first 400-yard day in Carson-Newman football history and bests the school record set by Danny Sanders in 1978 with 380 yards.
Thomas' favorite target on the day was Ward, who became the first ever football player under Ken Sparks with a 200-yard receiving performance, and the first in 13,914 days (1978).
