LMU blocks Eagles' path, 3-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman College men's soccer team fell behind early  and was unable to get a goal into the net Wednesday night at the new McCown Field. Lincoln Memorial's two early goals were more than enough as the Railsplitters shut out the Eagles 3-0 in a South Atlantic Conference match up.

Carson-Newman falls to 2-5 on the season after the loss and 1-2 in the SAC. The Railsplitters are 4-2-2 on the season and remain atop the conference standings at 3-0.

The Railsplitters' first goal came in the 22nd minute when Mario Pinto fired a shot at the left cross bar. The ball bounced off the bar and was mishandled by Carson-Newman senior goalkeeper Michael Alley (Kingsport, Tenn.) and rolled into the goal.

LMU's second goal came less than six minutes later with Yuri Passos booting an unassisted shot in from 25-yards out.

Down early, the Eagles kept the pressure on LMU, firing 14 shots at Railsplitters goalkeeper Michael Watkins. It was Watkins' night in goal, as he recorded 11 saves, including a spectacular one-on-one stop of a shot from C-N sophomore midfielder Tyson Adkinson (Franklin, Tenn.).

Carson-Newman sent shots at LMU all night, with Adkinson, senior forward Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England) and junior midfielder Taylor Jolley (Morristown, Tenn.) recording three shots each.

Junior midfielder Matt Craine (Morristown, Tenn.), freshman forward Joao Pedro Dowsley, senior defender Anthony Chiappetta (Morristown, Tenn.) and junior forward Jared Prall (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) all shooting twice.

With a little over two minutes to go and Alley playing up and away from the goal to help push the ball down field, LMU's Chris Nash sent an arcing shot bouncing down C-N's end of the field and into the empty net for the final goal of the game.

Alley finished the game with two saves.

The Eagles will next see action Saturday, Oct. 1 when they host SAC foe Lenoir-Rhyne on McCown Field at 7 p.m.
