SALISBURY, NC -- Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) scored just over five minutes into the first overtime period to put Catawba on the winning end of a South Atlantic Conference battle with Carson-Newman 2-1 at Frock Field Saturday evening. The Indians raise their record to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the SAC, the Eagles fall to 3-7 and 2-3.
Junior goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) started the game-winning sequence with a free kick near midfield that Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) got a touch on, sending it over the Carson-Newman defense for Smith to finish from eight yards away past Eagle goalkeeper Michael Alley.
Freshman defender Luke Kooyman (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland HS) made the late-game heroics all possible on his header from point blank range off a Smith corner kick in the 90th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Carson-Newman jumped on top 17 minutes into the second half as forward Robert Hill curled in a ball past Cardelle from 15 yards out for a 1-0 lead.
