Eagles travel to Lee for final non-conference matchup

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – To wrap up their non-conference slate of the 2021 season, Carson-Newman men's tennis (1-2, 0-0 SAC) travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to battle the Lee Flames (1-2, 0-1 GSC) for a midweek matchup.

This marks the fifth matchup for the Eagles prior to starting South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday against Limestone University. The Eagles come off a weekend where they took the matchup against Division I foe Austin Peay by a score of 4-3.

"Lee is a good opponent for our teams. They beat Tennessee Wesleyan who beat us earlier this year so they're definitely a quality team," head coach Jim Frederick said. "They're top 20 and will prove where we are heading into a tough weekend slate to start conference."

Saturday was a day for the sophomores. To start off, sophomore Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) was a crucial component to the Eagles success on Saturday. He took the no. 2 singles point by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 while also battling hard in no. 3 doubles and taking the 7-5 victory alongside sophomore teammate Joshua Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.). Ott was also successful in singles when he defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-0 in the no. 6 slot. Finally, sophomore Ids Waterbolk (Bennekom, Netherlands) won 4-6, 6-0, 7-0 in no. 3 singles but was sadly defeated alongside Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) 6-1 in no. 1 singles.

With the win by Ott and Janse, the Eagles secured the elusive doubles point for the first time this season in any of their four matches.

Dabdab saw another defeat by scores of 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 but this time around it was in the no. 4 singles position. The other singles losses came by junior Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) when he fell 6-0, 6-3 at no. 1 and by grad student Julian Froehlich (Kobenz, Austria) by a score of 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.

In the series history, Lee holds the 3-2 series lead. The two programs last met in February 2020 where the Eagles captured the 4-3 victory.

Opening serve from Cleveland, Tenn. is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Flames.
