Lady Eagles finish exhibitions with ETSU Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team will finish out its exhibition schedule on Saturday afternoon, facing the ETSU Lady Bucs at 1:30 p.m. in the ETSU/Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center.

Carson-Newman is coming off of losses to North Carolina and Tennessee, as the no. 16 Lady Vols beat Carson-Newman 104-44 at Thompson-Boling Arena on Thursday night.

"I thought our effort was good and I thought we competed," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey on Thursday night's performance in Knoxville.  "We didn't back down and necessarily play intimidated. What I know we have to work on come Friday is our offense. We still have to have more of a transition and then try to get looks."

Carson-Newman saw junior guard Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) and sophomore guard Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) score in double figures, with Markus leading the way with her 12 points in the second exhibition game of the year for the Lady Eagles on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles have also seen consistent play from junior Shyra Brown (Cleveland, Tenn.) who led Carson-Newman with nine points against North Carolina and she also put together a seven-point, six-rebound effort against the Lady Vols on Thursday.

ETSU returns eight letterwinners from last year's team including starters Tosha Austin (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Brianna Bogard (Georgetown, Texas), and Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.). The Lady Bucs, coached by Karen Kemp, were picked for a fourth place finish in the Atlantic Sun Conference in the preseason coaches poll.

Last year ETSU beat Carson-Newman 62-49 behind double-double efforts from the Lady Bucs' Tosha Austin and Natalie Pickwell, who led all scorers with 21 points.

Following this contest against the Lady Eagles will begin regular season play with a trip to Harrogate for the SAC-Conference of the Carolinas Challenge, where Carson-Newman will face Coker and Erskine from Nov. 9-10.

Fans can listen to Saturday's game against ETSU on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, with coverage beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff at 1:15 p.m. and the broadcast is also available www.cneagles.com.
