Lady Eagles fall to Trojans 58-51

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (13-10, 7-9 South Atlantic Conference) fell 58-51 to the Anderson Trojans (19-7, 13-3 South Atlantic Conference) at Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

The loss is Carson-Newman's fifth in the past six games, as Anderson swept the season series by finishing the game on an 11-4 run to win by seven points.

"It was 47-47 with four minutes to go and they made a few more plays than we did," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "I thought our kids played really hard and I told them in the locker room that we did enough to win from an effort standpoint but when you only score 14 points in the second half it makes it tough."

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by a pair of post players, as senior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) led the Lady Eagles with 19 points and she was joined in double-digits by senior Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.) with her 13 points and seven rebounds.

The first half was largely back-and-forth with the lead changing hands nine times and the teams were also tied nine times in the first 20 minutes. After Miles tied the game at 35 with 1:44 to play, Lacy Miller hit a pair of free throws to put Carson-Newman ahead at halftime 37-35.

Both teams were cold shooting in the second half, shooting well under their first half percentages. The Lady Eagles only posted 14 points in the second period, a season-low in the second half. The Lady Eagles also shot 23.1 percent from the field in the second half, with no Carson-Newman player scoring over five points.

Anderson led 47-41 with 8:41 remaining before Carson-Newman went on a 6-0 run over the next four minutes to even the score at 47 with 4:55 to play. Anderson quickly scored the next five points and finished the game on an 11-4 run to win by seven.

Anderson was led in scoring by Lesley Woods with her 19 points off the bench, 13 of those points coming off the bench. She was joined in double-figures by Breonda Shannon's 13 points and 10 points from the second-leading scorer in the SAC, Alissa Diaz.

Carson-Newman's top scorer Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.), who averages 11 points per game and had scored in double-figures the past three games, did not score against Anderson. She was 0-for-12 shooting from the field and misfired on all nine of her three-point shot attempts.

The Lady Eagles will next play on the road next Wednesday Feb. 27 at Catawba at 6 p.m. Coverage of the game is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff at 5:45 p.m. and the broadcast is also available on www.cneagles.com.
