NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (13-7, 7-6 South Atlantic Conference) fell to the Newberry Wolves (16-7, 8-5 South Atlantic Conference) by a 75-66 score at Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves closed out the contest on a 14-2 run, as the Lady Eagles dropped a conference road game for the first time since January 19.

"I was very pleased with our first half effort and with the numbers that we had I thought it was a good job by all of our players," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "We shot really well from the floor, we took care of the basketball, and our effort was there. Certainly the second half, especially down the stretch was a little bit different.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring once again by freshman Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) who scored 17 points thanks in part to her five three-pointers, tying her season-high for most treys in a game. Burstrom was joined in double-figures by senior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) who had 16 points and freshman Haley Coffelt (Tracy City, Tenn.) had a career-high 13 points, making her first five shots in the game.

Carson-Newman shot 57.7 percent from the field in the first half, and led at halftime 41-36. The Lady Eagles had 10 assists compared to five turnovers in the first 20 minutes, with Coffelt leading all scorers at the break with 10 points.

The Lady Eagles maintained the lead early in the second half, leading 55-49 with 12:39 left to play. Newberry went on a 6-1 run over the next three minutes to even the score at 56. After Carson-Newman trailed 60-59, Coffelt hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Eagles a 62-60 lead with 7:42 left to play. The lead grew to 64-61 with 5:25 to play before Newberry began its game-ending run.

The Wolves outscored the Lady Eagles 14-2 the rest of the game to pull away with the nine-point victory. Samantha Creed powered Newberry during the run, and she posted a career-high 35 points for the Wolves in the win. Creed's 35 points were also the most an individual player has scored against Carson-Newman.

Devanee Taylor also joined Creed in double-figures with her 15 points, and the Wolves improved to 7-0 in SAC play at home this season.

Carson-Newman will next play on the road at Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at Tex Turner Arena.
