Lady Eagles fall to Trojans 60-46

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (9-4, 3-3 South Atlantic Conference) saw a second-half surge from the Anderson Trojans (10-5, 4-1 South Atlantic Conference) to defeat the Lady Eagles 60-46 at Abney Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles and Trojans were tied at 32 with 13:40 to play before Anderson went on a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach.

"Anderson showed everything of what I knew they were capable of doing," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "I was proud of our kids in the first half, got in a hole early but kept scoring the basketball and they (Anderson) were playing well. We rebounded back within six at the half and I told them that was probably the hardest I've seen them play in the half-court man-to-man defensively this season."

Carson-Newman was led in scoring for the fourth consecutive game by junior Shyra Clark (Cleveland, Tenn.) as she scored 14 points, and was joined in double-digit scoring once again by Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.) with her 11 points and four rebounds.

The Lady Eagles shot a season-low 26.9 percent from the field, and the loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Carson-Newman.

Anderson opened with an early 17-6 lead. The Lady Eagles trimmed the gap to three points, going on a 13-2 run to put the score at 19-16 with 5:35 before halftime. Anderson answered by going on a 7-0 run to lead 26-16, but the Lady Eagles finished the half on a 6-0 run to go into the locker room trailing 26-22.

The second half began with neither team hitting from the field, with the first basket for Anderson coming at the 16:44 mark. After Anderson took a 30-24 lead, the Lady Eagles got back into the game by back-to-back three-pointers Lashawnda Peacher and Clark to tie the game at 30.

After the teams traded baskets to have the score tied at 32, Anderson went on its 17-2 run to power away from Carson-Newman to eventually take a 49-34 lead with 6:32 to play.  The Lady Eagles would not cut the lead to fewer than 11 for the rest of the game, as the Trojans won with the final score of 60-46.

Senior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman in rebounding with 10, and Miles has now scored double-figures in back-to-back games for the Lady Eagles. Anderson was led in scoring by preseason All-SAC first team selection Alissa Diaz with her 17 points.

The Lady Eagles will next play at home on Wed. Jan. 23 against Lincoln Memorial at Holt Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. Coverage is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff at 5:45 p.m. and the broadcast is also available on www.cneagles.com.
