Lady Eagles soar over Lady Saints 63-46

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (6-1) women's basketball team earned their sixth straight win with a 63-46 victory over the North Georgia Lady Saints (2-6) at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by freshman Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.) with her career-high 17 points, leading three Lady Eagles who scored in double figures.

"I thought we played better tonight than we had in the previous three games," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "It was certainly a nice victory for us."

McLaughlin was joined in double-digit scoring by Shyra Brown (11) and Whitney Moody (10), with Brown leading the team with seven rebounds.

Carson-Newman held 2012-13 NCAA Division II Player of the Year Jaymee Carnes to her second-lowest point total of the season, as she scored 16 points for the Lady Saints with eight rebounds. Carnes was joined in double figures by Stephanie Huffman with her 13points and six rebounds.

Carson-Newman never trailed in the contest, opening the contest on a 6-2 run. McLaughlin was instrumental to the Lady Eagles' success in the first half, as she led Carson-Newman with 11 points in the first 20 minutes.

The Lady Eagles finished the first half on an 8-2 run to lead at halftime 35-19. Carson-Newman shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, despite only being 1-of-5 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.

After beginning the second half with a 5-2 run, the Lady Eagles maintained a comfortable advantage for the rest of the game. With just over five minutes left in the game, Carson-Newman led North Georgia 54-42 before the Lady Eagles went on a 9-3 to increase the lead to 18 points with only two minutes left in the contest.

Carson-Newman outscored North Georgia 28-27 in the second half, yet the Lady Eagles picked up the victory winning by 17 points. The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field, and were 10-of-15 at the free throw line.
