Lady Eagles open home slate Tuesday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (3-1) women's basketball team will open their home schedule against the Columbus State Lady Cougars (1-0) at Holt Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m.

Carson-Newman is on a three-game winning streak, and the Lady Eagles defeated North Georgia and Georgia College this past weekend at the 2012 Lady Saints Tip-Off Classic in Dahlonega, Ga.

"To push our record to 3-1, two wins this past weekend over Peach Belt Conference schools, I'm happy about that," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring in both contests by freshman Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) After scoring a season-high 23 points against North Georgia on Friday, Burstrom keyed Carson-Newman's comeback 57-51 victory over Georgia College with 21 points on Saturday.

Burstrom finished her night shooting 4-of-6 shooting from three, 5-of-9 shooting from the field, and she was 7-of-8 at the free throw line as the Lady Eagles improved to 3-1 on Saturday.

Burstrom is Carson-Newman's leading scorer through the first four games, averaging 15.8 points per game. Junior Shyra Brown (Cleveland, Tenn.) has recorded double-doubles in two contests this year and is averaging close to a double-double per game at 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.

Carson-Newman will play at home for the first time this season, welcoming in a Columbus State team that won its season opener over Shorter 74-70 last Wednesday. The Lady Cougars were picked to finish third in the Peach Belt Conference preseason poll. Columbus State returns six players from last season's squad that went 16-11.

Last season Carson-Newman fell to Columbus State 68-61 on Dec. 31, 2011 in Columbus, Ga. Carson-Newman senior Whitney Moody (Blountville, Tenn.) posted a team-high 15 points in the contest as she was 6-of-10 from the field. No other active Lady Eagles scored more than five points in last season's meeting.

"Columbus State is going to be a good basketball team," said Mincey. "We went down and played them last year, they have good size and good athleticism. We have to prepare for them like they're preparing for us."

Coverage of Tuesday's home opener is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tip-Off at 4:45 p.m. and the broadcast is also available on www.cneagles.com.
