Carson-Newman Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (13-8, 7-7 South Atlantic Conference) will travel to Harrogate, Tenn., to face the LMU Lady Railsplitters (13-11, 6-8 South Atlantic Conference) at Tex Turner Arena on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

The Lady Eagles are looking for a season sweep of LMU, after Carson-Newman beat the Lady Railsplitters 63-51 on Jan. 23.

"We're excited to try and go get a win against a rival opponent," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "I think since we played them they are 5-2 and have beaten some really good teams. We're looking to go up there and compete and hopefully come home with a victory."

Carson-Newman is coming off of a 75-66 loss at Newberry on Saturday, and the Lady Eagles have lost three of their last four games.

Against Newberry, the Wolves closed out the contest on a 14-2 run, as the Lady Eagles dropped a conference road game for the first time since January 19.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring against Newberry by freshman Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) who scored 17 points thanks in part to her five three-pointers, tying her season-high for most treys in a game. Burstrom was joined in double-figures by senior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) who had 16 points and freshman Haley Coffelt (Tracy City, Tenn.) had a career-high 13 points, making her first five shots in the game.

The Lady Eagles won the first meeting against LMU 63-51 on Jan. 23 at Holt Fieldhouse. The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.) and Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.) with their 13 points, and the duo was joined in double figures by Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) who added 10 points on her 19th birthday as Carson-Newman improved to 6-0 at home.

LMU is one game back of Carson-Newman in the conference standings at 6-8, in a seventh-place tie with Wingate. The Lady Railsplitters have won three of their last four games, despite losing to conference-leading Anderson by a 57-55 score on the road last Saturday.

The Lady Railsplitters are led in scoring by guard Kalasia Green and forward Kelsey Bradford, as both players average just over 10 points per game. Bradford was the leading scorer for LMU against Carson-Newman on Jan. 23, scoring 14 points with four rebounds.

Coverage of the game is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff at 5:45 p.m. and the broadcast is also available on www.cneagles.com.
