Eagles rebound to take final match of the day at Govs Beach Challenge

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn - Carson-Newman advances to 8-4 on the season as they go 1-2 at the Governors Beach Challenge hosted by Austin Peay University.

The Eagles are now only three wins behind their best season wins total of 11 back in 2016, the team's second year of existence. 

GAME ONE: AUSTIN PEAY 5, CARSON-NEWMAN 0

The Eagles began their day off on the right foot, as Carson-Newman's Julia Wheeler and Alanis Mendez topped Janvier Buggs and Jaida Clark in three sets in an exhibition match. The Eagles fell in the first set 12-21, but came back to win the next one in a set of 21-19. This gave the Eagles enough momentum to complete the comeback with a third set of 15-10. 

Eisenhart and Waite were able to shift all of the momentum back to Austin Peay as their three-set win was enough to get the best of Halcrow and Hall.  The Eagles managed to capture the first set 21-15, but then fell 21-15 in the second set. The final set went into extra points as the Eagles became victim to the Austin Peay comeback in a set of 18-16. 

Carson-Newman won the next set in another overtime set of 25-23. Lindsey Geurin and Taylor Keeran were not able to hold off Austin Peay in the final two sets as they lost in sets of 21-13 and 15-12. 

McInnis and Seyring were able to give Austin Peay their most dominating match of the game as they won in two sets of 21-13 and 21-10 against Carson-Newman's Jenny Ille and Morgan Siwiec. This match would wind up sealing the victory for Austin Peay. 

Mia Toribio and Sierra Still lost in similar fashion as they fell to Austin Peay's Bullington and Mead in sets of 21-11 and 21-13. 

Kenzie Palmer and Abby Hildenbrand tried to close things out for the Eagles, but wound up losing in sets of 21-11 and 23-21. 

This becomes the Eagles' second 5-0 loss of the season and third straight 5-0 loss to the Governors in series history.

GAME TWO: UT CHATTANOOGA 4, CARSON-NEWMAN 1

Wheeler and Mendez won their second exhibition match of the day as they topple UT Chattanooga's Osband and Gresham in two sets of 21-11 and 21-16. Wheeler and Mendez both did not play in the first game against the Mocs.

Geurin and Keeran were the only pair to notch a win against UT Chattanooga in their first meeting, but were unable to win a set this time around as they fell in back-to-back sets of 21-13 and 21-18. Julia Davis gets her revenge against the duo, as her and Osband were the duo that lost to Geurin and Keeran in the first matchup. 

In the no. 4 position, Halcrow and Hall were able to turn things around for the sand Eagles. The duo dominated in the first set, winning 21-11. They then fell 14-21 in the second set to Victoria Cerino and Madi Morris. The Eagles were able to stifle the comeback attempt as they finished the last set off 15-12. 

Lomax and Steger were able to right the ship for UT Chattanooga as they won in sets of 21-12 and 21-10. Palmer and Siwiec continue to struggle as they fell to 0-4 on the day, with their closest set being 21-13 in the first game. 

Paige Gallentine and Neva Clark squared off against Hildenbrand and Ille in the no. 2 position, with the Mocs wound up winning in two back-to-back sets of 21-16. This match secured the victory for UT Chattanooga.

In the final match, Baylee Young and Gylian Finch closed out the match against CN's Still and Toribio. UT Chattanooga won in two sets of 21-14 and 21-18 to defeat the Eagles 4-1 for the second time this season. 

The Mocs have now won two straight over the Eagles. 

GAME THREE: CARSON-NEWMAN 4, JACKSONVILLE STATE 1

Siwiec and Palmer managed to turn things around, winning their first set of the day 21-13 against Jacksonville State's Macie Garrison and Emily-Kate Longeran. The Gamecocks took the second set, winning 18-21, but lost the overtime set in a close game of 15-12 to give Palmer and Siwiec their first win of the day. 

Carson-Newman lost their first exhibition match of the day as Schiffli and Lindberg topped Wheeler and Mendez. The Eagles kept things close as they lost the first match by a score of 21-18, then won in a closer set of 21-19. The duo fell in the third set 15-9.

Geurin and Keeran played the closest match of the day as they snuck by Randall and Lynch in a three-set match. The Eagles won the first game 21-19, but then lost in a close 21-18 set. After a long battle, the Eagles came out on top with a score of 15-13 to win the match. 

In the no. 2 position, Carmicheal and Kinderman tried to turn things around for the Gamecocks as they swept Toribio and Ille in two sets of 21-16, and 21-13. This was Toribio's first time playing outside of the no. 1 position this season. 

Halcrow and Hall clinched the match for the Eagles as they bested Pauze and Thomas in the no. 3 position. The pair won the first set 21-19, but then fell in the second set 21-6. The Eagles bounced back to win the third set, 15-12. 

Hildenbrand earned her first start this season at the no. 1 position, as her and Still took the final match of the day. The sand Eagles lost in the first set 21-15, but bounced back to win with sets of 21-6 and 15-13. 

The Eagles climb to 8-4 on the season so far. The Eagles have the best 12 game start to a season in program history, as this is the first time they have made it to 12 games with a winning record. 

The Eagles will look to even even the weekend out at 2-2 as they face UT Martin at 2:00 PM tomorrow in the final game of the Governors Beach Challenge at Austin Peay.
