Carson-Newman drops pair of matches on opening day of AVCA Small College Championships

TAVARES, Fla.- Carson-Newman dropped a pair matches against Concordia-Irvine and Saint Leo during the first day of the AVCA Small College Beach Championship. 

Game One: Concordia University Irvine 5, Carson-Newman 0

In the battle of the Eagles, the Screaming Eagles of CUI come out on top as Carson-Newman drops just it's third 5-0 loss of the season. 

In the no. 5 position, Lauren Clifton and Nicole Miller started the day with a 21-12 set. Lindsey Geurin and Taylor Keeran were unable to slow down the momentum as they lost the second set 21-18. 

In similar fashion, Bush and Cary were able to take down C-N's Piper Halcrown and McKenna Hall in sets of 21-12 and 21-19.

The no. 3 position held the most competitive set of the match as Shannon Evans and Tatum Smith got the best of Mia Toribio and Morgan Siwiec in sets of 21-17 and 22-20. This becomes Toribio's first loss of the season at the no. 3 position. 

Hailee Ryan and Sara Ostojic kept things moving for the Screaming Eagles as they pick up the win against Alanis Mendez and Julia Wheeler in sets of 21-12 and 21-11. 

Sierra Still and Abby Hildenbrand dropped the final match of the day in sets of 21-14 and 24-22. 

This match makes the tenth 5-0 victory for the screaming Eagles this season. Carson-Newman failed to win a single set for only the second time this season. 

Game Two: Saint Leo 4, Carson-Newman 1

For the second time this season, Saint Leo defeats Carson-Newman in a 4-1 game. 

The no. 5 position played out the same as the last time the two pairs faced off earlier this season, as Elizabeth Sandoval and Amanda Doherty take down Taylor Keeran and Lindsey Geurin in sets of 21-14 and 21-7.

During their last meeting, McKenna Hall and Piper Halcrow were the only Eagles to record a winning match, but this time the Eagles fell short against Clare Flanagan and Breanna Reinhart in sets of 21-10 and 21-18. 

Mia Toribio and Morgan Siwiec were able to win Carson-Newman's lone point of the day against Ally Reese-Williams and Emma Miller. The Eagles dropped the first set 21-15 but were able to come back to win the following set 21-11. The Eagles would win the overtime set in dominating fashion with a set of 15-4. 

The Lions clinched the victory with a winning effort from no. 2 position. Aliya Fredette and Leann Potter take down Alanis Mendez and Julia Wheeler in sets of 21-9 and 21-6. 

The no. 1 position held the most exciting match of the day as Nina Vattovaz and Jeanetter Henderson came out victorious against C-N's Abby Hildenbrand and Sierra Still. The Eagles were able to clinch the first set with a 21-18 victory but lost in a 23-21 effort on the next set. The overtime set ended with a 17-15 victory to give the Lions the 4-1 win. 

Carson-Newman drops to 14-11 on the season, while their record at the AVCA Small College Beach Championship drops to 1-13 all time. 

The Eagles will face a familiar foe on Friday, Apr. 15 at 1:00 PM, as they go against the Tusculum pioneers for the third time this season. Fans can follow along with live stats here
