C-N heads to LMU for first SAC action of the season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - After a 16-2 conference record in 2022, Carson-Newman will head over to Mary Mars Gymnasium on Tuesday night to play their first SAC matchup of the 2023 season.

The Eagles played at Trevecca Nazarene's Ray Thrasher Classic this past weekend, winning once to Alabama-Huntsville, dropping the three following matches, all the while learning a lot about themselves as a program.

Coach Ashley Tiernan has this to say about their upcoming match:  "We learned a lot about ourselves and each other this past weekend and we are ready to step on the court and compete in a conference game. I am excited to see our response to the many things that we learned and talked about this past weekend."

Lincoln Memorial has not defeated Carson-Newman since October of 2018 under head coach Alison Williams. The Railsplitters went 12-4 in regular season competition that year, the highest win percentage the program has seen since 2007.

The Railsplitters have started off the 2023 year undefeated after competing at the Erskine College Invitation this past weekend. During the two-day event, LMU faced Clark Atlanta, Erskine, and Lee University. The matches against Clark Atlanta and Erskine were won in only three sets each. They have not played in any SAC matchups this season, and will also debut against C-N this Tuesday.

Senior Ketura Margaret led the force in kills, marking 20 against Lee. LMU was led in assists by Amanda Lisi and Luren Pickett, Lisi notching twenty against Lee and 16 against Erskine. Railsplitter volleyball is coached by Chris Phillips who enters her second year as head of the program.

Lincoln Memorial has brought in five athletes this season, four freshman and a transfer, Agata Bogdanska, a 6-2 middle blocker from Hillsborough Community College. Freshman setter Lauren Pickett made her collegiate debut against Clark Atlanta this Sept. 1 where she led the team in assists by a landslide. Kristen Moehring returns as a senior outside and opposite hitter for the Railsplittlers after gathering 249 kills last season. Outside hitter Maggie Sanderson earned the second most kills last season for LMU with 217.

Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial will meet on Tuesday Sept. 5 at 6 P.M at Mary Mars Gymnasium. To watch live, head over to FloSports (subscription required).
