Fall Frosty Awards Nominees: Female Freshman of the Year

From now until Jan. 2, the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Department will debut the Frosty Award nominees for the fall semester.  These are the fall nominees for Female Freshman of the Year. Thursday, we'll unveil the fall nominees for Upset of the Year.  

The 11th annual Frosty Awards will take place April 30 and honor athletic excellence in Carson-Newman's athletic department.

Female Freshman of the Year 

Blair Cherry (Volleyball): Cherry joined the volleyball program after a successful stint at Knoxville Catholic School where she was a four-time all region selection. She played in thirty matches this season as a freshman setter and collected 723 assists and 239 digs. She averaged 6.82 assists per set  and 2.25 digs per set. Cherry's performance against Wingate on Oct. 6 tied for seventh highest count of assists in a five set match in school history with 52 assists. She collected over 40 assists in a match on five separate occasions and had 11 double-doubles. 

Trinity Hafey (Volleyball): Freshman libero Trinity Hafey saw time in 27 matches in her first season as an Eagle. She averaged 2.83 digs per set and had 283 on the season. Against Wingate on Oct. 6, she collected a season high 29 digs. She hit double digit efforts 12 times this season. 

Martina Ivanova (Swimming): Ivanova stood second on the podium for the 200-yard butterfly against #1 ranked University of Indianapolis. She swam the race in 2:05.17. Ivanova grabbed another top-5 finish in the 100 fly in 57.95. During the Emory Invitational, Ivanova swam four personal bests and placed first in the 200 fly in 2:04.14, an NCAA DII 'B' cut. Ivanova has two first-place finishes on the season so far, along with eight top-5 finishes and six personal best performances. 

Jenna Pittman (Cross Country): Pittman had an incredibly successful campaign, starting with a 9th place finish at the SAC Preview in the 6k, clocking in at 23:24.47. At the UNG invitational, Pittman found herself right outside the top-10 in 11th after a scorching 18:42.7 in the 5k. She continued her impressive start with the Eagles with a 2nd place finish at the ASICS Invitational, right behind teammate Katie Smock at 18:23.1 in the 5k. In the 6k at Southside park in the SAC Championships, Pittman cut over a minute off her time to start the season, finishing 23rd at 21:54.95.

McKenna Spaulding (Cross Country): In her first race with the Eagles, Spaulding impressed with a 23rd place finish at the SAC Preview, clocking in at 24:48.23. At the UNG Invite Spaulding earned a 21st place finish to help the team earn a 2nd place finish overall. Spaulding helped vault the Eagles to a first place finish at the ASICS Invitational, finishing 18th at 19:41.1 in the 5k. At the SAC Championships, Pittman shaved almost two minutes off her time in the 6k, clocking in at 22:55.94.

Krista Nielsen (Soccer): Starting eight of the final nine games of the season, Nielsen was an impactful freshman for Simon Duffy's NCAA tournament team. The forward scored three goals and added one assist. Her first collegiate goal came in her first collegiate game, a 5-3 rout of North Greenville on Aug 31. Nielsen's third and final goal of the year helped start a comeback against Anderson in the SAC Quarterfinals on Nov 4th. Half of her 30 shots were on target this season. 

Berna Kabakci (Soccer): After missing the first three games of the season, Kabakci was inserted right into the C-N's lineup as the top goalkeeper. In her first career start, Kabakci made a career-high ten saves in a 1-0 loss to Anderson. It was the most saves in a match since Jasmine Rizk made 11 at Catawba on October 26, 2019. She ended the season with two clean sheets, and made a total of 52 saves. In 14 total appearances, she went 5-7-2 as a keeper.
