JEFFERSON CITY, TN – After Team Orange came back from a five-run deficit to tie the game at five in the top of the fifth inning, Team Blue scored twice in the bottom half of the frame to win game five of the Orange-Blue World Series 7-5, taking the series 3-1-1.
Not only did Blue take the series, but the sides take run differential into account, which Blue also won by a tally of 31-27. By virtue of winning the series, Blue receives t-shirts and as a result of taking the run differential will dine for free at Gondolier, an Italian restaurant in Jefferson City.
C-N baseball assistant coaches were named the head coaches of each squad as first-year assistant coach John Topoleski's team took the victory over assistant coach Tyler Miller's squad. Miller was victorious in last year's Orange-Blue World Series which was his first go-around as an assistant coach with the team.
The Hitting MVP Award was given to junior outfield Tyler Thompson (Gallatin, TN) of Blue. There were co-MVPs for the pitching award as junior Brayden Coe (Bridgeville, Pa.) and Hunter Long (Powell, TN) both earned the award.
Long entered the game in relief to start the final inning of the contest and did not allow a hit to the final three Orange batters. Junior right fielder Jordan Griffin (Ellerslie, Ga.) was the last hope for Orange but struck out swinging with nobody on base to end the contest.
Blue team dog-piled Long on the mound in celebration of the victory.
Carson-Newman's season begins on Friday, January 31st at 4 p.m. on the road against Limestone in Gaffney, South Carolina.
