Shaver seals TSWA Pitcher of the Week laurel

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the first time in his career, Tyler Shaver earned Pitcher of the Week honors from the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Wednesday afternoon for a dazzling start against Mars Hill on Saturday.

The Dandridge, Tenn. native logged his first start of the season in game one throwing 102 pitches over eight scoreless innings punching out a career-high 12 with two hits and three walks helping Carson-Newman to a 10-7 win over the Lions on Saturday.

Shaver retired the side in order in four of his eight innings with a runner reaching scoring position twice, in the fourth and fifth before the righty stranded the runners.

He becomes the first Carson-Newman pitcher to earn an honor from the organization since Matt Bradley (Talbott, Tenn.) earned the honor on April 17, 2018 after shutting out Lenoir-Rhyne during his freshman season.

The sophomore right-hander is off to a dazzling start to the season with 12.08 strikeouts per nine innings, second in the SAC, a 0.87 WHIP, third, and a 1.42 ERA, third. His 10 appearances on the year rank fourth nationally. He has piled up 34 punch outs ranking fourth in the league having fanned at least three batters in six of his 10 outings on the year.

He is 2-0 with a save on the year picking up his save with three flawless frames against West Liberty on Feb. 8 where he struck out eight batters. Opponents are hitting .145 against him on the season.

The Eagles are in action in roughly an hour playing at 2 p.m. against Limestone from the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. The game airs on cneagles.com/live with the Eagle Sports Network providing the coverage.
