HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles opened the game on a 12-0 run and never looked back in a 95-57 win over Hiwasse College at the LMU Classic on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, C-N's second in 24 hours after Friday night's win over Concord, the Eagles improve to 2-1 on the year.
Junior guard J.J. Wesley (Mobile, Ala.) canned one of his six three-pointers during the opening stretch as led by double figures for almost 37 minutes. He finished 6-of-11 from behind the arc with a team-high 23 points. He also had five steals.
Senior Darren Maxtion (Huntsville, Ala.) had the Eagles most complete effort, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The Eagles shot 48.8 percent from the floor in the first half to build a 45-22 lead at the break. They hurt themselves from the line, shooting 50 percent for the game, connecting on just 13-of-26 attempts.
Senior Jordan Dixon (Clinton, Tenn.) added 19 points, while true freshman Collin Crane (Knoxville, Tenn.) had 12 points in his first start. Sophomore Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) had 13 rebounds and two blocks.
Carson-Newman returns to action on Monday against the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse.
