Eagles Set to Host Inaugural Dick Campbell Memorial Classic

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men’s basketball team will be hosting the inaugural Dick Campbell Memorial Classic over the weekend.

No. 14 Tusculum, Georgia College and North Georgia will join the Eagles for the two-day event.

C-N (3-1) opens the tournament against Georgia College (2-0) on Friday at 6 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse. Tusculum (2-1) and North Georgia (2-1) will play in the nightcap at 8.

The Eagles will then take on North Georgia on Saturday at 4 p.m. after Tusculum and Georgia College square off in the opener at 2 p.m.

The tournament is being held in memory of C-N basketball coaching legend Dick Campbell, who passed away in June. Campbell coached at C-N from 1958-67.

One of the most successful coaches in school history, Campbell led the Eagles to a 227-63 (.782) record during his nine seasons at Mossy Creek. He had six season of 25 wins or more, including a 30-4 campaign in 1963-64, when the Eagles won five NAIA Tournament games to finish third in the country. The finish is still the highest in school history.

The Eagles enter the tournament riding a three-game winning streak, which includes a 65-64 victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Monday.

SAC-foe Tusculum has been a unanimous top 15 selection in the preseason, while Georgia College & State was an NCAA Tournament team a season ago.
