King College Drains Season-High 16 Threes En Route to 100-87 Victory Over Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men’s basketball team was unable to overcome a barrage of 3-pointers from King College on Saturday night, as the Eagles fell to the Tornado, 100-87, at Holt Fieldhouse.

King torched the nets for a season-high 16 three-pointers, including 12 in the first half.

With the loss, C-N falls to 4-5 on the season, while King improves to 4-2 with its fourth straight victory.

The Eagles lost despite shooting a season-best 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field. King connected on 53.2 percent (33-of-62) of its shots, including a 16-for-34 effort from behind the arc.

Senior Darron Maxtion (Huntsville, Ala.) paced the Eagles with a career-high 29 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Maxtion was 11-of-15 from the floor and 7-for-8 at the charity stripe.

Guard Trey Caruthers (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) and forward Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) also turned in career-highs for C-N with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Junior guard J.J. Wesley (Mobile, Ala.) chipped in 11 points.

Elisha Murray and Craig McCargo tossed in 16 points apiece to lead five Tornado in double figures. Brian Hewitt poured in 14 points, while Jason Seymore and Stephen Kite netted 13 and 12 points, respectively, in the win.

King built a 19-8 lead to open the contest by knocking down seven 3-pointers in the first six minutes of play.

The Tornado pushed their lead to as many as 23 points in the half. Murray drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give King a 62-44 lead heading into the locker room.

C-N opened the second half on a 10-5 run to trim King’s lead down to 11 behind four points from Maxtion, but the Eagles failed to cut the Tornado’s lead below double digits the rest of the way.

The Eagles return to action on Dec. 30 against Lees-McRae. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
