Carson-Newman’s Wesley Garners SAC Player of the Week Honors

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Carson-Newman junior guard J.J. Wesley (Mobile, Ala.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Wesley led the Eagles to a 2-1 record last week, knocking down the game-winning jumper in a Monday night thriller against Alabama-Huntsville. The junior's 18-footer with under five seconds to play gave the Eagles a 65-64 win over the visiting Chargers. He led the Eagles with 15 points in the win.

Wesley, in his first season at C-N, followed up Monday’s game-winning performance with a 42-point weekend in the inaugural Dick Campbell Memorial Classic at Holt Fieldhouse. He had 24 points in a loss to Georgia College & State on Friday, hitting four of six 3-pointers, and added 18 points in a win over North Georgia on Saturday.

For the week, the Eagles' shooting guard averaged 19 points and two assists. He shot 52 percent (22-of-42) from the floor and 47.6 percent from behind the arc, knocking down 10-of-21 three-point attempts on the week.

Wesley is leading C-N in scoring this season, averaging 18 points per game. He is shooting 50 percent (39-of-78) from the floor and 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from 3-point range.

The Eagles, who are 4-2 on the season, return to action on Wednesday at Maryville College. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
