ROCK HILL, S.C. — Carson-Newman junior guard J.J. Wesley
(Mobile, Ala.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's
Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced
Monday.
Wesley led the Eagles to a 2-1 record last week, knocking down the
game-winning jumper in a Monday night thriller against
Alabama-Huntsville. The junior's 18-footer with under five seconds
to play gave the Eagles a 65-64 win over the visiting Chargers. He
led the Eagles with 15 points in the win.
Wesley, in his first season at C-N, followed up Monday’s
game-winning performance with a 42-point weekend in the inaugural
Dick Campbell Memorial Classic at Holt Fieldhouse. He had 24 points
in a loss to Georgia College & State on Friday, hitting four of
six 3-pointers, and added 18 points in a win over North Georgia on
Saturday.
For the week, the Eagles' shooting guard averaged 19 points and two
assists. He shot 52 percent (22-of-42) from the floor and 47.6
percent from behind the arc, knocking down 10-of-21 three-point
attempts on the week.
Wesley is leading C-N in scoring this season, averaging 18 points
per game. He is shooting 50 percent (39-of-78) from the floor and
46.9 percent (23-of-49) from 3-point range.
The Eagles, who are 4-2 on the season, return to action on
Wednesday at Maryville College. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
