JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Senior guard Jordan Dixon
(Clinton, Tenn.) scored a career-high 30 points to lead the
Carson-Newman men’s basketball team to a 77-73 victory over
North Georgia on Saturday afternoon in game four of the Dick
Campbell Memorial Classic at Holt Fieldhouse.
Dixon was 11-of-17 from the field, including one 3-pointer, and he
knocked down all seven of his free throw attempts in the win.
With the victory, the Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season. North
Georgia falls to 3-3 overall.
C-N bounced back from a poor shooting performance on Friday to make
48.2 percent (27-of-56) of its field goal attempts, including a
5-for-10 effort from 3-point range.
North Georgia shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) on the night and made 11
of its 25 attempts from behind the arc.
North Georgia held a decisive advantage on the boards by
outrebounding C-N 48-26, with 22 of those rebounds coming on the
offensive end. The Eagles won the turnover battle by forcing 27
Saints turnovers while giving the ball up 17 times.
Junior guard J.J. Wesley (Mobile, Ala.) fired in 18 points for the
Eagles, including four 3-pointers. Darron Maxtion (Huntsville,
Ala.) chipped in eight points, and Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge,
Tenn.) added seven points and grabbed a team-high nine boards in
the win.
Michael Moynihan and Carl Taylor poured in 21 and 20 points,
respectively, to lead the Saints. Both Moynihan and Taylor knocked
down five 3-pointers. Bernard Rimmer pitched in 12 points and eight
rebounds in the loss.
The Eagles held a 38-35 lead with 1:19 left in the first half, but
Taylor drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 38-38 with 58 seconds
remaining.
Moynihan then knocked down a three with one second left on the
clock to give North Georgia a 41-38 lead heading into the locker
room.
C-N stormed back in the second half and went on a 22-10 run capped
off by a 3-point play from Dixon that gave the Eagles a 60-51
advantage.
However, the Saints kept their composure and fought back to trim
C-N’s lead to 75-73 on a 3-point play by Moynihan with 19
seconds left in regulation.
But Dixon sank a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining to
seal the win.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday at Maryville College.
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
