Eagles finish in the top 10 at the Spring Kick-Off Intercollegiate

After a two-day event, the Carson-Newman men's golf team landed in 8th place out of 17 teams at the Spring Kick-Off Intercollegiate in Fleming Island, Fla., Tuesday.

Despite a first round where the Eagles finished with 309, the men's team improved their score by 14 strokes in round two shooting a combined score of 295, which helped to move them up into the top 10.

The Eagles played against two ranked teams and four opponents within their conference.

Carson-Newman finished the tournament with a combined score of 604 (+36) which put them six strokes ahead of conference opponents Lenior-Rhyne who placed 10th, eight strokes ahead of Tusculum College who took 12th and 18 strokes ahead of Catawba who finished 17th.

Senior Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) fired a 76 (+5) in day one's round followed by a two-under 69 (-2) on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 12th.

Along with Hay, junior Johnathan Kim-Moss (Mississauga, Canada) finished in the top 20 after shooting a second round 73 to finish six over for the tournament. His second round included two eagles on the front nine.

Also improving in round two were junior Rafael Jackson (Rutledge, Tenn.). who shot an 80 (+11) for round one and 78 (+7) for round two tying him for 65th and senior Michael Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), who hit a round one  88 (16+) and 75 (+4) in round two tying him for 77th. Along with Horenkamp, freshman Nathan Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) tied for 77th finishing with a 78 (+7) in round one and an 85 (+14) to end day two.

Hay was very pleased with members on his team and was proud to see some of them improve throughout different parts of the tournament.

"It was hard to prepare for this tournament in result of poor weather conditions back at Carson-Newman, we were a little bit rusty coming out," Hay said. "We still played some great golf and we know what we have to work on to move forward."

The Eagles will tee off again on March 4 at the The 22nd Annual Richard Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury.
