DAVIE, Fla. – Heading into tomorrow's final round at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, No. 20 Carson-Newman sits in a tie for 10th place thanks to a second consecutive under par round from junior Luke Stock (Oxted, England).
"We played a really solid round to get into position to make a run at the NCAA finals ," Carson-Newman head coach Randy Wylie said. "Luke Stock was excellent once again. A collapse by Elliot MacGregor at the end of the round kept the team from moving into the top six. But, I like how we played and am excitied for the guys to make a strong push tomorrow.
Stock continued his stellar play on the first day, into round two. He made a pair of birdies and bogeys on the front nine to finish at even par. The junior rattled in three birdies in the closing nine to secure a 3-under 68 in the middle round. His five birdies in the round were a team-high for day two. Stock enters the final round in a tie for third place. He will enter the final round tied with Florida Southern's Adam Alvarez for individual honors.
Hayden Hunneke (Chattanooga, Tenn.) started his day off on a solid note by making birdie on the par 5 third hole. Three bogeys hurt Hunneke to close his front nine at 2-over par. The graduate student found a groove on the back nine, nailing a pair of birdies and bogeys to shoot even par on the back nine, to finish 2-over for the day.
Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) played a birdie-free second round, but did secure 15 pars to finish at 3-over for the day. The graduate student made two bogeys on par 3s, with one coming on each nine.
Antonio Farinella (Knoxville, Tenn.) played a solid back nine to finish 6-over in the second round. He made par on eight of his final nine holes of the day, including six in a row. He heads into the final round tied for 89th.
Elliot MacGregor (Shepperton, Middlesex) was on fire to begin his second round, making birdie on two of his first three holes. He finished the opening nine at 1-under par. After making two birdies with a bogey sandwiched in between on the back nine, MacGregor finished his round by going bogey, bogey, triple bogey to finish with a 4-over 75.
Despite scoring five strokes worse than the opening round, C-N was able to climb two spots on moving day at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional. The Eagles sit in a tie with Florida Southern for 10th.
With how things currently stand, C-N is just three strokes away from sixth place. Gaining at least three strokes in tomorrow's final round would secure the Eagles a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championships.
Barry leads after going 9-under as a team in the first two rounds of the regional.
