BRISTOL, Tenn. – Five players scored in double figures and five individuals recorded at least five rebounds as Carson-Newman led for all but 14 seconds in a 71-65 win at King Wednesday evening at the Student Center Complex.
"We just wanted to win the game and taste victory again," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "Our grading thing was about effort. I thought the effort was much better today. We went deeper into the bench. King came out and they made shot down the stretch. We had some looks and some shots around the rim and we didn't make shots.
"What I am proud of is that we had a new, adjusted lineup. We made enough plays down the stretch to come out of here with a victory. On the road, it's always hard. This place has always been a tough place for us so we are happy to come out of here with a win."
Carson-Newman (7-3) continues its dominance against King (3-4) in the all-time series moving to 21-0 all-time winning for the ninth time on the road in the series.
A layup from Trinity Lee on King's first possession of the game opened the scoring. Kayla Marosites (Elizabethton, Tenn.) hit back-to-back triples and Briana Smith hit a driving layup to cap an 8-0 burst to put the Lady Eagles on top. A 10-2 surge to build an 11-point bulge on a layup from Caroline Harville (Morristown, Tenn.) at 20-9.
The Tornado countered with six straight before C-N scored the final three points of the quarter to take a 23-15 lead into the second stanza.
C-N went 4-for-17 from the field in the second quarter as King cut the margin to 23-20 over the first two minutes of the frame. At 31-27 with 2:34 to go before the break, C-N closed out the half on an 8-2 run as Kelci Marosites (Elizabethton, Tenn.) converted an and-one in the final half minute to make it a 39-29 affair after 20 minutes.
The run continued into the second as the Lady Eagles pushed the margin to a game-high 17 points at 48-31 less than three minutes into the second half. Spanning the break, C-N outscored King 17-4 over a five-minute stretch.
Coach Josh Thompson's crew found a groove and outscored the visitors 24-12 over the next nine minutes to make it a 60-55 game with 8:15 to go. The Tornado cut the deficit to three points thrice over the final 5:27 including at 68-65 with 1:03 to play. Haris Price (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) made three of four, her first miss in 29 tries, at the line to close out the game.
Kayla Marosites led the Lady Eagles with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists going 6-for-11 from the field. Price finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. The club was plus-12 with Marosites on the court and plus-16 with Price in the game.

Harville ended the game with her best scoring effort to date with 12 points while adding four rebounds in 26 minutes. She had played 19 minutes and had two points prior to the game.
"Coach Mincey was telling us to focus on stopping their post," Harville said. "I was really worried about making sure that she wasn't getting into the paint. If Haris Price is going to give me the ball, I'm going to score it for her. We moved the ball really well and I thought we shot the ball well."
Briana Smith (Nashville, Tenn.) and Addison Byrd (Nashville, Tenn.) each ended the night with 10 points as the latter posted seven rebounds.
In the first and third quarters, Carson-Newman was 18-for-34 from the field compared to 6-for-31 shooting in the second and fourth frames. The team did combine to go 13-for-15 in the second and fourth quarters.
Kori West notched another double-double for coach Thompson with 11 points and 14 rebounds while adding five assists. Kristen Cupples had 16 points and collected eight caroms.
