Gattis named TSWA State Player of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman freshman pitcher Rylee Gattis (Southside, Ala.) has been named the Tennessee Sportswriters' Association State Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.

The accolade is the second for Gattis from her weekend's worth of action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. She also picked up all-tournament honors from the NFCA from the weekend.

Last week, Gattis went 3-1 with a 1.14 ERA in four starts covering 24.2 innings. She gave up just four total runs with nine strikeouts.

The Southside, Ala., native worked four shutout innings in a win against Mars Hill and tossed a complete game in a 2-1 victory against Columbus State, giving up one run on six hits with three strikeouts.

The freshman righthander suffered a 1-0 loss against Alabama-Huntsville, allowing one run on six hits in 6.2 innings, but rebounded in a 4-2 victory versus Ohio Dominican, giving up two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Gattis improved to 5-2 in nine outings over 46.2 innings this season with 20 strikeouts.

She is Carson-Newman's first TSWA Player of the Week honoree since Shannon Smith was recognized on March 21, 2021.

Gattis and the rest of the Eagles will be in action Wednesday at noon against Coker.  Coverage of the doubleheader is available on the Eagles Sports Network at cneagles.com/live.  A video stream is available through FloSports.
