JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 21 Carson-Newman (17-5) will look to bounce back from its first sweep of the season when it travels to one of the hottest offensive teams in the country Thursday.
The Eagles play two against North Greenville (10-10) starting at 2 p.m. from Jan McDonald Field.
North Greenville has been swinging an exceptionally hot bat as a team this year. The Crusaders are hitting .364 this season as a team and rank 11th nationally. NGU is 15th in the country with 199 hits. The Crusaders have tallied double-digit hits in nine out of 20 games played this season.
Carson-Newman has won six straight in the series with NGU. All three of the Crusaders' wins in the series have come in Tigerville (2011, 2016 and 2018). The Crusaders haven't scored more than three runs but once on C-N during the Eagles' current six-game win streak in the series.
Carson-Newman is playing exceedingly defensive-minded softball. The Eagles have made just two errors in their last nine games. A six-game streak was tied with the second-longest error-free streak of softball for Carson-Newman over the last 16 years.
Carson-Newman's .981 fielding percentage is the best in the SAC and the sixth-best total nationally (however, among teams that have played at least 10 games, the Eagles rank third nationally).
Macey Hughes is the 12th player in school history with 20 career home runs. Her next bomb will place her in a tie for 10th on the all-time list with Staci Fish (2000-01) and Katie Pritchett (2015-18) and their 21 home runs. Elayna Siebert (2013-16) sits in ninth place all-time with 22 career home runs.
Macauley Bailey is halfway to Carson-Newman's single-season home run record. Brittany Hefner is the single-season record-holder with 19. Bailey has nine through 20 of Carson-Newman's scheduled 48 regular season games. She ranks seventh in the nation and in the SAC behind reigning national player of the year Kayson Boatner. Bailey is also eighth in the nation in RBI with 29. Should Bailey get to double-digit home runs, she would join two-time All-American Abby Fiessinger as the only freshman in the history of the Carson-Newman softball program with double-digit bombs in a freshman season.
Carson-Newman is coming off of a home doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Limestone Saints. It marked the first time in seven doubleheaders that Carson-Newman had been swept at home. Queens and Lincoln Memorial were the only teams to sweep Carson-Newman at home last season.
First pitch between the Eagles and Crusaders is set for 2 p.m. North Greenville will provide video through the Conference Carolinas Digital Network. Follow along on Twitter at @CN_Eagles.
