JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After a challenging weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, Carson-Newman 15-3, 2-0 South Atlantic Conference) jumps back into league play with a visit from Coker (12-6, 0-0 SAC) Wednesday at noon.
Carson-Newman is receiving votes in the NFCA Poll for the first time this season.
Carson-Newman is playing exceedingly defensive-minded softball. The Eagles are error free over their last five games. This is the fifth streak of five games or more where C-N hasn't made an error in the last 16 years, and the second under Michael Graves. Last year's team made it 11 games where it didn't make an error.
Carson-Newman's .980 fielding percentage is the best in the SAC and the 12th-best total nationally (however, among teams that have played at least 10 games, the Eagles rank sixth nationally).
Macey Hughes is the 12th player in school history with 20 career home runs. Her next bomb will place her in a tie for 10th on the all-time list with Staci Fish (2000-01) and Katie Pritchett (2015-18) and their 21 home runs. Elayna Siebert (2013-16) sits in ninth place all-time with 22 career home runs.
After a hot start where she homered five times in 15 at bats, Macauley Bailey is looking to regain her crazy offensive form from the early part of February. The freshman is still seventh nationally in RBI (24) and fifth in home runs (seven), however, she is 0-for-15 at the plate in the Eagles' last five games.
Offensively, Carson-Newman is 18th nationally in hits (148), 19th in home runs (17), 17th in runs scored (109) and 17th in triples (six). However, after scoring a minimum of five runs in six straight games, C-N has failed to score five runs in four straight games.
Carson-Newman has won five straight against Coker, the longest win streak for either team in the series' history. The Eagles lead the all-time series 18-13. Carson-Newman has swept two of the last three doubleheaders played in Jefferson City.
Coker pitcher Jenae Fedewa is two weeks removed from earning SAC Pitcher of the Week honors. Fedewa chucked a no-hitter, one of three in the South Atlantic Conference this season, as the Cobras defeated Converse 9-0 on Feb. 15. She sat down 16 of the 17 batters that she faced with four strikeouts and allowed just one walk in the five innings that she pitched.
First pitch between the Eagles and Cobras is set for noon. Coverage is available on the Eagle Sports Network at cneagles.com/live.
