Bulldogs sweep Eagles to take control of first

WINGATE, N.C. No. 17 Wingate (33-8, 13-3 SAC) cemented its spot atop the South Atlantic Conference standings by taking two from Carson-Newman (25-9, 10-6 SAC) Sunday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex.

The Bulldogs won game one in walk-off run rule fashion 12-4 before staving off a late C-N rally for a 9-6 win in the nightcap.

"I'm not going to sugarcoat anything and we didn't after the game in talks," Carson-Newman head softball coach Michael Graves said. "I think we got beat in every facet of the game. I am proud of the fact that we came into the top of the seventh and put up a fight (of game two). That makes the coach proud when no matter how bad your day is going or what the score is that they are still trying to score runs.

"I do think we had some very good innings on the mound, but we know as a unit we have got to keep working to get better in that area of our game. We understand that there is nothing that we can do now about the past, but we do have eight more conference games that we can control what happens in them. I have a great group of girls and I know that they will continue working to be the best we can be come tournament time."

Macey Hughes (Corryton, Tenn.) moved into the top 10 all-time in Carson-Newman history for home runs, hitting her 21st all-time.  Hughes was also 3-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and a dinger.
