JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Winners of five of its first seven at home, Carson-Newman (8-5) looks to continue its success in a standalone game with Davis & Elkins (3-9) at The Vick on Friday at 1 p.m.
Returning home for first time in almost two weeks, C-N got back to its winning ways on Tuesday against North Greenville. The Eagles' offense tallied 17 runs on 17 hits across the two games, while C-N held the Trailblazers' offense at bay, allowing four runs against a quality North Greenville offense.
Riley Sikes (Powell, Tenn.) and Syerra Rogers (Graysville, Tenn.) pitched most of the innings in the two games. Rogers dealt four innings before Lexi Lacy (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) pitched a 1-2-3 5th inning to clinch C-N's sixth run-rule victory. Sikes dealt a season-high six innings, striking out five in game two's win, and despite a little traffic in the 7th, Lorelei Spradlin (Blacksburg, Va.) struck out two in a one-inning relief appearance to help C-N clinch the sweep.
Offensively, Mari Robbins (Sweetwater, Tenn.) accounted for six of C-N's 17 runs, mashing two three-run home runs to put her in second place in the South Atlantic Conference. Coming into the midweek matchups, Robbins had three RBIs on solo home runs but tripled her total with the two home runs on Tuesday. Three other Eagles had multi-RBI days, with Abbi Martin (Gadsden, Ala.), Trinity Brooks (Jackson, Tenn.), and SieAnna Cameron (Alcoa, Tenn.) cashing in multiple runs in game one.
The Eagles welcome a Davis & Elkins squad who has had a rocky start through its first 12 games. The Senators come to Jefferson City after losing six of the last seven games, with the lone win coming against Kentucky Wesleyan on February 14th.
The Eagles and the Senators have only had one other matchup, facing off for the first and only time in February 2015. It was a run-rule no-hit effort, as Danielle Kranz blanked the Senators while striking out eight, helping C-N win 8-0 in a game that barely eclipsed the one hour mark.
Despite the tough start, the Senators' Lina Gutierrez and Ashlyn Zapach are hitting above .400. Gutierrez, the reigning MEC offensive Player of the Week, is leading the Senators in batting average (.488) and went 5-of-10 at the plate last week. Zapach is the Senators' top RBI threat, hitting .447 with 16 RBIs. No other hitter has more than seven.
In the circle, the innings have been spread between three arms. Reigning MEC Pitcher of the Week Saylor Kneeland has thrown 18.1 innings with an 8.78 ERA, earning the honor following a five-inning complete game performance in the run-rule win over Kentucky Wesleyan. Dawn Morris leads the staff in ERA with a 7.56 ERA over 16.2 innings, while Sammie Jarvis has dealt the most innings, tossing 25.2 with a 9.00 ERA.
Through 12 games, the Davis & Elkins offense ranks 2nd in the Mountain East in batting average but has played five more games than anyone else in the league. The Senators in team ERA rank 6th in the conference, posting an 8.93 ERA.
The Eagles will look to continue their success at home in the 2nd all-time meeting against the Senators at 1 p.m. on Friday.
