Carson-Newman Competes Strong in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams competed strong against Queens (N.C.), Darton State, and West Florida (in women's competition only) at the UWF Aquatic Center on Thursday evening.

The women's quad-meet featured Carson-Newman against Darton State, Queens, and host West Florida, while the men's competition was a tri-meet against Queens and Darton State.  In the men's events, Queens defeated Carson-Newman 119-74. In the women's events, Carson-Newman fell to Queens 125-71, and fell to West Florida 133-72.

Freshman Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) won the women's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.57. Burnett also finished second in the women's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.07.

Carson-Newman won the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Luke Johnson, Drew Rutledge, Ben Young, and Stephen Parsons posted a time of 1:28.23.

Freshman Tommy Bourgeois (Kingsport, Tenn.) won the men's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.13. The Eagles took the top four spots in the event with freshman Brandon Calfee (Morristown, Tenn.) coming in second at 5:20.22, freshman Austin Murphy (Morristown, Tenn.) coming in third at 5:24.18, and freshman D.J. Smith (Johnson City, Tenn.) was fourth with a time of 5:52.75.

Freshman Kent Eldreth (Knoxville, Tenn.) won the men's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.33. Eldreth also finished third in the men's 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.33.

Freshman Joshua Grover (Villa Rica, Ga.) finished second in the men's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:22.74. Grover also placed fourth in the men's 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:25.45.

Carson-Newman finished second in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Kelly Faulkner, Taylor Bing, Tia Turner, and Hannah Kiser posted a time of 1:46.17.

Senior Ben Young finished third in the men's 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.94, just ahead of teammate Freshman Sam Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) who finished fourth in that event with a time of 22.28.

Schechter finished second in the men's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.43.

Freshman Drew Rutledge (Lexington, S.C.) finished fourth in the men's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.25.

Junior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) finished fourth in the men's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.48.

Parsons also came in fourth in the men's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.08.

Freshman Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.) finished third in the women's 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:42.17. Smith also finished fifth in the women's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:08.98.

Freshman Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) finished third in the women's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.57.

Freshman Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn.) finished fifth in the women's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:58.68. Bing also placed fourth in the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.87.

Carson-Newman finished third in the women's 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Amanda Henderson, Aly Kaywork, Natalie Burnett, and Samantha Starnes posted a time of 1:51.33.

Carson-Newman finished third in the men's 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Ben Young, Kent Eldreth, Connor Graham, and Sam Schechter posted a time of 1:40.55.

Both the Queens men's and women's swimming teams are ranked second in the nation in the latest CSCAA poll. The West Florida women's team is ranked No. 18 in the latest CSCAA poll.

Carson-Newman will next compete on Jan. 18 in a tri-meet against Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba in Hickory, N.C., at 1 p.m. Full results of the tri-meet will be available on www.cneagles.com.
