Carson-Newman Earns NCAA Provisional Qualifiers

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams has eight individual qualifiers, and six relay qualifiers for a total of 14 individuals for 18 events as provisional qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships.

The Carson-Newman men's team is ranked No. 18 in the country according to College Swimming while the website also has the Carson-Newman women's team ranked No. 24.

"Our team swam incredibly well," said Carson-Newman head swimming coach Paige McCord. "Particularly, we had some standout swims that helped rocket our team in the standings. Ben's 20.4 on the lead off of the relay set the tone early. After that, several other junior leaders followed his lead with incredible relay and individual performances that posted very, very strong times."

While these provisional qualifiers are subject to change, the final announcement about Carson-Newman's NCAA qualifiers will be made early next week.

The Carson-Newman team of Samantha Starnes, Whitney Owen, Aly Kaywork, and Natalie Burnett earned a relay provisional qualifying time of 1:37.01 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Carson-Newman team of Ben Young, Drew Rutledge, Sam Schechter, and Stephen Parsons earned a relay provisional qualifying time of 1:22.42 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Carson-Newman team of Samantha Starnes, Taylor Bing, Whitney Owen, and Aly Kaywork earned a relay provisional qualifying time of 3:33.50 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Also in the 400-yard freestyle relay on the men's side, the Carson-Newman team of Ben Young, Drew Rutledge, Sam Schechter, and Stephen Parsons earned a relay provisional qualifying time of 3:03.38.

Freshman Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) earned three individual provisional qualifying times. In the 200-yard individual medley, she recorded a time of 2:06.88, in the 100-yard backstroke she recorded a time of 57.31, and in the 200-yard backstroke she recorded a time of 2:02.96.

Freshman Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) earned two individual provisional qualifying times. In the 50-yard freestyle she recorded a time of 23.84, and in the 100-yard freestyle she had a time of 57.55.

Junior Stephen Parsons earned two individual provisional qualifying times. In the 200-yard freestyle he recorded a time of 2:02.96, and in the 100-yard freestyle he recorded a time of 1:39.66.

Senior Ben Young earned two individual provisional qualifying times. In the 50-yard freestyle he recorded a time of 20.46, and in the 100-yard freestyle he recorded a time of 45.57.

Freshman Kent Eldreth (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned two individual provisional qualifying times. In the 100-yard breaststroke he recorded a time of 56.18, and in the 200-yard breaststoke he collected a time of 2:03.99.

Freshman Joshua Grover (Villa Rica, Ga.) earned an individual provisional qualifying time in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:02.39.

Freshman Sam Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned an individual provisional qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.01.

Freshman Samantha Starnes (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned an individual provisional qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.11.

The Eagles are coming off of a solid showing at the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships. In the women's competition, Carson-Newman finished sixth with 568 points with Wingate winning the meet with 1395.5 points. Carson-Newman also finished sixth in the men's competition with 495 points, with Wingate winning that meet with 1394.5 points.
