Eagle Swimmers Complete First Day in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles men's and women's swimming teams competed strong at the first day of the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center on Friday.

Carson-Newman proved to be competitive on Friday, setting a good foundation for Saturday and Sunday's events.

"Our swimmers are performing phenomenally!" said Carson-Newman head swimming coach Paige McCord. "Many national provisional cuts and life time bests have been made. Great way to start!"

In the women's competition, Carson-Newman is in sixth place with 178 points, with Queens in first place with 431.5 points through 12 events.

In the men's competition, Carson-Newman is in eighth place with 145 points, while Queens is in first place with 473.5 points through 12 events.

Carson-Newman is competing against: Catawba, Converse, Davis & Elkins, Fairmont State, Johns Hopkins, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Pfeiffer, Queens, Randolph-Macon, Savannah College of A&D, Washington and Lee, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Wingate.

In the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, Carson-Newman's team of Natalie Burnett, Aly Kaywork, Whitney Owen, and Samantha Starnes finished in fifth place with a time of 1:37.17.

In the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, Carson-Newman's team of Ben Young, Drew Rutledge, Sam Schechter, and Stephen Parsons finished in fifth place with a time of 1:22.42.

In the women's 400-yard medley relay, Carson-Newman's team of Amanda Henderson, Nancy Claire Smith, Natalie Burnett, and Aly Kaywork finished in fifth place with a time of 3:58.67.

In the men's 400-yard medley relay, Carson-Newman's team of Ben Young, Kent Eldreth, Joshua Grover, and Stephen Parsons finished in seventh place with a time of 3:23.67.

In the women's 200-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman freshman Taylor Bing (Memphis, Tenn.) finished in 13th place with a time of 5:12.00.

In the women's 200-yard individual medley, Carson-Newman freshman Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) finished in seventh place with a time of 2:06.88.

In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman freshman Samantha Starnes (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished in 11th place with a time of 24.11.

In the men's 50-yard freestyle Carson-Newman freshman Sam Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished in 13th place with a time of 21.01, just one tenth of a second faster than teammate senior Ben Young  who finished in 14th with 21.02.

In the women's 1000-yard freestyle, Carson-Newman freshman Katie Zientarski  (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished in 13th place with a time of 11:14.05.

In the men's 1000-yard freestyle Carson-Newman's Luke Johnson finished in 12th place with a time of 10:06.18.
