Carson-Newman Swim begins the regular season at Emory & Henry

Ben Young Interview

EMORY, Va.- Carson-Newman swim opens the regular season against Emory & Henry, Friday at 6:00 p.m.

The Carson-Newman swim team will compete in their first conference meet of the 2022-2023 season against Emory & Henry this Friday at 6:00 p.m. The last time the Eagles faced off with the Wasps was in 2015 where the women took home a 143-62 victory. Emory & Henry has since added a men's program as well, making this the first time Carson-Newman's mens swim team will race the Wasps from Va.

"We haven't seen a lot of them. Obviously, with both of us now being in the South Atlantic Conference full time, we'll see a lot more of them, so that'll be a good relationship to build on. I'm excited to go up there. It's nice to go to different pools and see different facilities and race different people," head swim coach Ben Young said.

The Eagles have had the chance to get in the water competitively twice so far this season at the Upstate Splash Open Water Swim in Salem, S.C. and the annual intrasquad Blue v. Orange Championships last week at home.

"The atmosphere last week was great. A lot of people got up and raced hard. It was nice to see everybody get up and go, and it was nice to have a full pool deck again. It was just a great opportunity and great atmosphere to get up and race," Young said.

The upcoming meet will mark the start of a long season as the Eagles' first conference competition this year. The races will be held in John Rutledge King Center.

"It's a short course meters pool, and we don't spend a lot of time in short course meters, so the times will be a little bit different, but it just gives us an opportunity to practice again and hone in our details," Young said.

The Eagles have been training since the middle of August, but practice will begin to look different for Carson-Newman as the season progresses.

"So, the first six weeks was really all about capacity training and aerobic training, which everyone hates, but we will switch into a little bit more of a utilization gear moving forward. It's crazy that it's already about to be midseason. It's really right around the corner, so we're half-way there. We'll shift gears a little bit and we'll start to train a little bit differently. We're going to switch up some groups and switch some people through. We want to get some different training opportunities for them, so it'll be nice to see how they respond to it and where we are able to move forward, but we are definitely looking at this meet and those in the near future to prepare us for midseason," Young said.

The Eagles will race at 6:00 p.m. on Friday in Emory, Va.
