Lady Eagles drop close match at YHC

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (3-2) women's tennis team fought hard before falling 5-4 to Young Harris (1-1) Sunday afternoon.

"This was a tough match to lose," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We had the opportunities to win."

The Eagles brought in three points in singles play. At no. 1 singles, Stefy Stand (Ecuador) defeated Ann-Sophie Porry 5-7, 6-0, 6-4. Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) crushed Carolina Hernandez 6-3, 6-0 in the no. 3 spot, and Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) trounced Kadie Hudgins at no. 6 with a 6-0, 6-1 final.

At no. 5 singles, Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) took Victoria Herndon through three sets, including a seven point second set tiebreaker, before dropping to a 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 decision.

"The team match came down to a third set in Brooke Sanderson's singles match," Love said. "Unfortunately she could not pull it out."

The team of Guerreiro and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) brought in the fourth point at no. 3 doubles with an 8-5 win over Herndon and Hudgins.

"Strong performances were turned in by Patricia Guerreiro, Stefy Stand and Katie Brown in singles," Love said. "Guerreiro and Jennifer Ott secured the only doubles point."

Stand and Breanne Tremblay scrapped at no. 1 doubles before losing 8-6 to Hernandez and Porry.

The Eagles take on Lee in their home opener Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m.
