Stepp, Guerreiro tabbed for Bojangles Athletes of the Week

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman track and field's Tanner Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) and women's tennis' Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) have been named Bojangles' Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

Stepp followed up his All-American performance at last week's NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships by qualifying for the Outdoor National Championships with a school record-breaking high jump at the Power Sox Invitational. Stepp beat the former Carson-Newman record by a half-inch with a leap that reached 2.12 meters.

Stepp's jump is currently the highest leap in Division II this season. His leap not only reset his personal and school records, but also set the track record at Lenior-Rhyne's Irwin Belk Track. His jump reset Kenneth Foster's record jump that was recorded in 1979.

Stepp also recorded a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.55 meters, which is ranked fourth in the SAC.

Guerreiro went 7-1 last week in singles and doubles play combined and she did not drop a singles set in the week and helped the Eagles go 3-1 on the week.

In singles play, she knocked off: Anderson's Mairead Cleary 6-3,6-3, North Greenville's Camille Duhan 6-0,6-0, Catawba's Caroline Graham 6-0,6-2 and Wingate's Caroline Holland 6-4,6-1 after moving up to the team's number two position. She is now 7-1 in singles play this season.

Guerreiro combined with teammate Jennifer Ott in doubles play to go 3-1 on the week. They knocked off Catawba's duo of Jade Henke and Grace Diepenbrock 8-6, North Greenville's team of Ann Hayden Huxford and Aline Ribeiro 8-3 and Anderson's combination of Abigail and Lindsay Gregory 8-3. The duo of Guerreiro and Ott were on a seven-match win streak in doubles play before dropping a set to Wingate .

Bojangles is a proud corporate sponsor of Carson-Newman athletics.  Eagle fans can get a free large sweet tea from the Jefferson City location the day after Carson-Newman basketball games where the Eagle women score 65 points or the men score 70 points by telling the cashier, "It's Bo Time at Carson-Newman."
