Carson-Newman takes Senior Day victory 6-3 over Lincoln Memorial

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's tennis team (7-10, 4-5 SAC) snapped its seven-match losing streak as the Eagles took down Lincoln Memorial (5-9, 3-8 SAC) 6-3 Sunday afternoon for their final South Atlantic Conference showdown for the regular season.

"Good win for the women," coach Jean Love said. "They bounced back after a disappointing loss yesterday."

The match also served as Senior Day for the Eagles, as they honored Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn) beforehand for her time here at Carson-Newman University.

The Eagles' lone senior had a productive day as she came up with her fifth singles victory on the year in a 3-2 win after opponent abandoned at No. 3. She also teamed up with Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) to come up with another win, 8-3 in the third round of doubles play.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) were also victors in their doubles match. The Eagles' duo put down a pair of Railsplitters 8-3 in the No. 2 match.

After an injury to Mallory Jackson (Ewrin, Tenn.), Carson-Newman was forced to shuffle up their lineup for singles play. Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) led off in place of her teammate and fell 6-3, 6-4. Catherine Cook (Morristown, Tenn.) also came up short in the final match of the day, as she lost 8-4.

Other than that Carson-Newman was impressive in winning the rest of the way.

Guerreiro made short work of her competition in the No. 2 match, winning 6-4, 6-0. Sanderson and Chastain then followed with victories at No. 4 and 5. They won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively.

At the end of the day, Love's only concern was her senior going out the right way.

"Jeniffer Ott has breathed Carson-Newman tennis for four years," Love said. I'm so glad to have been her coach."

Carson-Newman will try and add another win to the column on Tuesday as they travel to King University for a 2 p.m.matchup.
