Fall Frosty Awards Nominees: Male Freshman of the Year

From now until Jan. 2, the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Department will debut the Frosty Award nominees for the fall semester.  These are the fall nominees for Male Freshman of the Year. Wednesday, we'll unveil the fall nominees for Female Freshman of the Year.  

The 11th annual Frosty Awards will take place April 30 and honor athletic excellence in Carson-Newman's athletic department.

Male Freshman of the Year 

Tyler Jones (Cross Country): Jones kicked off his freshman campaign with a 25th place finish at the SAC Preview with an impressive 28:53.49 in the 8k. In his following race, Jones took 69th with a 30:17.2 in the 8k at the UNG Invitational. In the ASICS Invitational, Jones slotted in 57th with his best time recorded as a freshman, coming in at 28:36.8. With steady improvement in his first year with the Eagles, Jones impressed in his freshman campaign.

Mekhi Brown (Football): Brown turned in a stellar freshman campaign that saw him earn conference player of the week honors on two occasions before being named the league's defensive freshman of the year.  He is the seventh Eagle to win the defensive honor and the 13th to be presented with either the defensive or offensive freshman of the year accolade. Brown led Carson-Newman with 71 tackles.  He also tallied 13 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, picked off two passes (one of which he returned for a score), recovered two fumbles and blocked a kick.  He was the first freshman recognized with a weekly honor from the SAC in five years, while also becoming the first player in more than 15 years to go back-to-back as a player of the week for the league for C-N. 

Maxime Wester (Soccer): Wester burst onto the scene as a freshman, making 16 starts and earning All-SAC Third Team honors. He scored his first career goal in the final seconds of the 3-0 win versus Emory & Henry on Sept 20. His second and final goal came as the finishing touches on a 3-1 comeback victory versus Tusculum on Nov 1. Both goals he scored in his freshman season were scored in the final minute of the game. He played in 16 of the 17 games, with 14 starts. Wester managed 17 shots, five on target. 

Fletcher Gibson (Football): Fletcher Gibson started the final nine games of the year and appeared in all 11 games for the Eagles on the offensive line.  He was a part of a front five that gave up the second-fewest sacks in the SAC and the 36th fewest tackles for loss in the country.  

Cam Ferguson (Football): Ferguson became the first Carson-Newman freshman running back to start two of the first three games of his career.  Ferguson carried the ball 87 times for 418 yards and a touchdown.  He had a 65 yard carry that set up Carson-Newman for a go-ahead score at Newberry.  His top game came at UVA Wise when he rushed the ball seven times for 89 yards.  

Daniel Ribeiro (Swimming): Ribeiro took home gold in the men's 100-yard backstroke (48.98) against #1 ranked University of Indianapolis. He finished fifth in both the 100 free (45.64) and 100 fly (48.93) at the dual meet, earning a NCAA DII 'B' cut in the fly. He contributed to a second-place finish in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. At the Emory Invitational, Ribeiro placed first in the 100 fly with another NCAA DII 'B' cut performance (44.57). He swam a personal best in the 50 free in 21.10 for a fourth-place finish. Ribeiro has nine first-place finishes on the season so far, along with 13 top-5 finishes and 11 personal best performances. 

Daniel de Oliveira (Swimming): De Oliveira placed first in the 200-yard freestyle timed finals in 1:39.58 against #1 ranked University of Indianapolis. He earned an NCAA DII 'B' cut for his performance. He also earned a 'B' cut for his 45.31-second 100 free. De Oliveira placed third in the 100 fly (48.86) and fourth in the 200 fly (1:57.65) during the dual meet. He contributed to a second-place finish in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. During the Emory Fall Invitational, de Oliveira grabbed fourth in the 100 fly in 48.74 and fifth in the 50 free with a new personal best, 21.15. De Oliveira has four first-place finishes on the season and nine top-5 performances. He has set four personal bests during his time so far at Carson-Newman. 

Noah Cambridge (Men's Golf): Cambridge impressed in his first fall season with the Eagles, with a 23rd place finish at 6-over at the Hurricane Invitational, helping the Eagles to a 7th place team finish. In his debut with the Eagles, Daugherty finished 41st amongst a strong field of competitors, shooting 5-over in the three rounds at the Mizuno Intercollegiate. 

Rhydian Williams (Soccer): Williams played in 15 games, making most of his impact toward the final stretch of the season. He recorded his first career goal in a 2-2 tie with Catawba on Oct 14. His first career assist came two days later, in a 1-1 tie with Lee. The midfielder was efficient, with seven of his nine shots going on target. Cambridge rounded out his fall campaign placing 70th at 16-over at the Copperhead Invitational.

Garrett Wilson (Cross Country): Wilson kicked off his first season with the Eagles with a 35th place finish in the 8k at the SAC Preview with a time of 29:38.02. In his next race at the ASICS Invitational, Wilson improved his 8k time by over two minutes with a 27:13.4 time with a 24th place finish. In an extremely competitive field featuring some of the best teams in the country at the Royals XC Challenge, Wilson clocked in at 28:12.2, good for 178th amongst the strong field. Wilson finished 80th at the SAC Championships which took place at the same course as the SAC Preview, and he clocked in almost three minutes faster at 26:49.6, finishing 80th

Jeron Newson (Football): Newson shrugged off early season injuries to close his freshman campaign with a flourish.  Newson wrapped up the year with 10 catches for 168 yards and three scores.  He had eight catches, 140 yards and all three touchdowns in the final three weeks of the season. Newson caught five passes for a career-best 68 yards in the finale against Catawba.
