NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time this season, Carson-Newman's football program has had a player selected as the Tennessee Sportswriters' Association State Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday night.
Mekhi Brown (Wauchula, Fla.) garnered his third defensive player of the week award this season, but his first from the TSWA. Brown was previously recognized by the South Atlantic Conference for his efforts in a win over Newberry and a loss to Tusculum. He joins Jake Cottle as TSWA defensive honorees this season.
Brown turned in a second straight double-digit tackle performance in the Eagles' 21-17 loss to Mars Hill Saturday.
He also added in a season-best 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. The yardage the Lions lost on the tackles for loss added up to the quarter of a football field. Brown's three solo sacks of Mars Hill QB JR Martin backed the Lions up 21 yards.
As a result of his performance, Brown ranks 11th nationally and second in the SAC with 7.5 sacks this season.
His 11.5 tackles for loss this season are third in the league.
Brown and the rest of the Eagles will be on display Saturday when they take on Emory & Henry on Homecoming.
