Read Totals Four Points as Eagles Begin SAC Schedule with Win at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Tom Read (London, England) played a role in all three Carson-Newman goals on the day, totaling four points on a goal and two assists as the Eagles breezed past the Newberry Wolves, 3-0, on Saturday at Smith Road Complex in Newberry, S.C.

"The boys played fantastic from beginning to end today," Soccer Coach Richard Moodie said. "They really were brilliant, they earned another clean sheet. It looked good all the way around.

This victory allows Carson-Newman to start their South Atlantic Conference schedule 1-0 and they bump their overall record to 4-1. Newberry is off to a rough start in conference play, as they are 0-2 in the SAC and 2-3 on the year.

After 12 minutes of scoreless soccer, Poly Avgousti (Paphos, Cyprus) broke the ice with his first goal of the season. Avgousti took a pass from Read and fired a bullet past the keeper from 30 yards out, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The teams stayed within one goal of each other for the rest of the first half, but in the 62nd minute, Read took a free kick from 20 yards and knocked it over the wall, but under the bar for his second goal of 2016.

"Tom's goal was fantastic," Moodie said. "You couldn't hit that ball better than he did. He's been getting frustrated because after the year he had in 2015, teams are marking him a lot, trying to make things difficult for him, but you can only keep him off the scoresheet for so long. That being said, we were in no way a one man show today. Everybody contributed and helped us get three points."

The C-N defense limited the Wolves to just ten shots overall, with only two on frame. Goalkeeper Joe Boyd (Nottingham, England) made short work of the two balls that did come his way, saving them both. This clean sheet makes three-in-a-row for the freshman.

Travis Whitt (Waxhaw, N.C.) added his name to the box score in the 90th minute when he received a pass from Read, sprinted into the 18-yard box and beat the goalkeeper to make the final 3-0. For Whitt, this was his first collegiate goal.

After four straight road games, the Eagles are back home on Wednesday and they'll host Mars Hill at 7:30pm. Live stats and HD video of the contest will be available on cneagles.com/live. Mark Inserra will have the call and there will be a full recap on cneagles.com postgame.
