Late goal drops Carson-Newman again as Eagles fall to Young Harris

VIDEO: Richard Moodie Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn – Ramin Varnhorn's 84th minute goal broke a 1-1 tie as the Young Harris Mountain Lions made off with a 2-1 victory over the Carson-Newman Eagles at McCown Field on Wednesday evening in Jefferson City, Tennessee.

"I think we could've had a little more fight about us," Soccer Coach Richard Moodie said. "Even when we concede the goal, there is no nitty-gritty, nobody really wanted to go out and win the game. This year hasn't went the greatest for us. We just weren't able to see the game out."

The Eagles second consecutive loss drops them to .500 at 6-6. Young Harris picks up their third straight win to reach 5-5.

The game-winner was set up by an offside call against Carson-Newman. Goalie Anton Viden's free kick was headed by Varnhorn from just outside the 18-yard box to Mikie Rowe, who took it into the left corner and lofted a cross towards the six-yard box. Varnhorn was there and outjumped his defender for the ball, heading it past a diving Joe Boyd for the tally that would prove to be the difference in the contest.

The opportunity that led to the Mountain Lions' first score started with a run down the left side by Alex Jacq. The freshman sent a low cross into the box and Mehdy Hidane charged into the scoring area and flicked it past Joe Boyd (Nottingham, England) to put his team in front. The goal was Hidane's second of the season.

Young Harris had chances to add to their edge, but two good plays by Boyd prevented that from happening. The first one came off a corner in the 27th minute, when Jonny Denton's boot found Macauley King's head, but Boyd got to the ball before it crossed the line for a save. In the 29th minute, Carlos Gomez raced into the box with the ball for a goal-scoring chance, but Boyd was again on point to make a save and keep the score frozen.

Carson-Newman continued pushing to tie the score in the second half, but it wasn't until the 79th minute that the perfect opportunity presented itself. A hand ball in the box by Young Harris set up Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) with a penalty kick and the senior converted for his team-high sixth goal of the season. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the game wouldn't stay tied for long
