JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn – Tom Read (London, England) scored one goal and assisted on two others to lead the way for the Carson-Newman men's soccer team as they breezed past the King Tornado, 4-0, on Wednesday night at McCown Field.

The Eagles now have two straight wins to their credit and are 6-4 this season, while King drops to .500 with a 5-5 record.

Ashley Kelynack (High Wycombe, England), the hero of C-N's win on Saturday over Anderson (S.C.), got his team on the board in the 15th minute. A turnover by King brought the ball to the feet of Poly Avgousti (Paphos, Cypurs) in the top left corner of the 18-yard box and his cross found Kelynack in front of the goal. The freshman flicked the ball past keeper Kari Sveinsson to give his team a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles continued to threaten throughout the remainder of the first half, but were unable to increase their lead. They totaled nine shots over the first 45 minutes, six of them on goal, but Sveinsson made five saves to keep the Tornado within a goal. King only totaled five shots with two on net, but Joe Boyd (Nottingham, England) saved them both.

In the second half, the Eagles found the range and blew the game open. Read began the second half scoring in the 57th minute, when a through ball from Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) found him racing towards the net. The junior beat two defenders to the ball and launched a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was on target for his fifth goal of the season.

Read returned the favor to Staalby in the 64th minute. The Londoner lofted a pass into the box for his teammate and Staalby settled it and bounced it over the line, matching Read with his team-high fifth score this year.

In the 65th minute, Read picked up his SAC-best 10th assist of the year when his pass led Evan Harr (Bristol, Tenn.) into the box and the freshman capitalized for his first collegiate goal, stretching the Eagles' lead to 4-0.

In goal for C-N, the freshman Boyd had perhaps the best game in his C-N career to this point, making a career-high eight saves and denying the Tornado several opportunities to get on the scoresheet. Boyd picked up his third clean sheet of the year and improved his record to 6-4.

On Saturday, the Eagles return to conference play with a 3:30pm game against Catawba at McCown Field. Mark Inserra will be on the call for the live broadcast on cneagles.com/live, where you can also find live stats. The recap will be published on cneagles.com postgame.
