VIDEO: Tom Read Interview
ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the second straight season, Carson-Newman forward Tom Read (London, England) has earned a spot on the South Atlantic Conference first-team following a regular season in which he led the conference and finished tied for fifth in Division II with 12 assists.
Read was one of three Carson-Newman players to be selected as All-SAC in 2016, as senior forward Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) and freshman goalkeeper Joe Boyd (Nottingham, England) were also named Honorable Mention.
Read's 12 assists also combined with five goals to give him 22 points on the season, tied for fifth-most in the league. The junior put together his best performance on Sept. 10th in a 7-0 C-N win over Flagler. He tied a 20-year-old program record for assists in a game with four, matching a mark set by German Arguelles in 1995, and also added a goal. Read had multiple assists in a game four times this season. His career total of 28 assists puts him just four behind Brad Cobbs's all-time record of 32.
Staalby closed out his career as an Eagle by leading the team with seven goals, including two against Lenoir-Rhyne on Sept. 28th. During his four years at Mossy Creek, he totaled 20 scores, tying for the tenth most in school history. This marks his third consecutive season being selected as All-SAC.
Boyd entered the season as an unknown but made his mark with 15 games of exceptional goalkeeping. Despite missing C-N's last two contests, the freshman goalie still finished third in the conference with 69 saves and also put up a save percentage of .775, third in the SAC, and a goals-against average of 1.35, which placed him fifth. His three clean sheets also tied him for third in the league.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Ismael Noumansana was selected as the SAC Player of the Year after leading the conference with 16 goals and 33 points. Daniele Proch of Catawba earned Freshman of the Year honors for a six goal, eight assist campaign in which he finished third in the league with 23 points. Gary Hamill of Wingate was chosen as Coach of the Year.
The Bulldogs led the conference with a total of eight first-team selections, which was more than any team combined between all three rosters. Tusculum had the second-most with seven players chosen, followed by Lincoln Memorial's five and Lenoir-Rhyne with four.
